Marvel's X-Men '97 premiered under weird circumstances earlier this year as series showrunner Beau DeMayo parted way with Marvel just days before the first episodes were released on Disney+. No official word was ever revealed about why Marvel and DeMayo went their separate ways, but execs at Marvel continued to speak fondly of him and DeMayo himself continued to talk about the show as episodes were being released. Now a new update has arrived concerning the future of Marvel's X-Men '97, with a report from Deadline revealing that Marvel's What If...? scribe Matthew Chauncey is set to take over as the writer for the series.

According to the trade, Chauncey will succeed Beau DeMayo as the lead writer for the show, but Chauncey will actually be penning the THIRD season of Marvel's X-Men '97. Before parting ways with Marvel Studios, Beau DeMayo had already written both season 1 and season 2 for X-Men '97. The report goes on to note that the scripts for season 2 have been revised, but that Chauncey's work on season 3 is now in active development. He'll work along side X-Men '97 director Jake Castorena and consulting producers Larry Houston and Eric and Julia Lewald (who returned to the Marvel team after working on X-Men: The Animated Series in the 1990s).

Speaking in a previous interview with ComicBook's Phase Zero podcast earlier this year, Jake Castorena opened up about the process of Season 2 of X-Men '97, equating it to baking a cake. He added, "Nobody wants to ruin a cake. I don't want to ruin a cake. Let us bake it," Castorena laughed. "The cake is well underway and being made, being fabricated as we speak. There is no rest for the wicked I guess. To use that phrase. We rolled right into Season 2, while we were on Season 1!"

"I did write a lot of Season 2," DeMayo previously shared about his involvement in season 2 of X-Men '97. "However, unlike Season 1, I will not be heavily involved or leading production, cast records, design, editorial, post, music, etc., nor doing any production rewrites as it relates to the creative vision of the show. This is why I've said I can't really speak to Season 2. But, looking forward to seeing the final product with you all whenever it airs. I have high hopes."

Original X-Men: The Animated Series cast members Cal Dodd (Wolverine), Lenore Zann (Rogue), George Buza (Beast), Alison Sealy-Smith (Storm), Adrian Hough (Nightcrawler), and Christopher Britton (Mister Sinister) reprise their roles from the '90s series while returning cast members Catherine Disher (original Jean Grey), Chris Potter (original Gambit), Alyson Court (original Jubilee), and Lawrence Bayne (original Cable) voice new characters.

The new X-Men '97 cast includes Ray Chase (Cyclops), Jennifer Hale (Jean Grey), JP Karliak (Morph), AJ LoCascio (Gambit), Holly Chou (Jubilee), Isaac Robinson-Smith (Bishop), and Matthew Waterson (Magneto).

X-Men '97 is now streaming on Disney+.

Nicolas Cage's Spider-Man Noir Series Casts Brendan Gleeson as Its Villain https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/spider-man-noir-tv-series-casts-brendan-gleeson-nicolas-cage/ Tue, 09 Jul 2024 22:59:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo 207df0f6-aee9-4661-9875-4522ee4c0397

Brendan Gleeson is the latest actor to be caught within Nicolas Cage's spider web. The Golden Globe and Oscar-winning star of The Banshees of Inisherin has been cast as the villain of Sony's live-action Spider-Man Noir series for Amazon and MGM+, Variety reports. Gleeson is the latest addition to the still-growing cast that includes Cage as a version of the black-clad private investigator he voiced in 2018's animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and New Girl's Lamorne Morris as Robbie Robertson.

Details about Gleeson's role weren't immediately available, but Marvel's original Spider-Man Noir comic re-imagined many of Spider-Man's classic villains as gangster types in 1930s New York. They included Norman "The Goblin" Osborn, a carnival freak turned crime lord, and his carnie cronies Kraven (a former animal trainer), the Vulture (an animalistic freak show cannibal), and the Chameleon (a master of disguise).

Noir "tells the story of an aging and down on his luck private investigator (Cage) in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city's one and only superhero," the official synopsis states.

It has been reported that Cage's character isn't Peter Parker, who was reimagined as an investigative reporter and crusading crime-fighter who took on the mob against the backdrop of the Great Depression in the 2008 Spider-Man Noir series by David Hine, Fabrice Sapolsky, and Carmine Di Giandomenico.

Emmy Award-winning director Harry Bradbeer (Fleabag, Killing Eve) is set to direct and executive produce the first two episodes of the eight-episode series from co-showrunners and executive producers Oren Uziel (The Lost City, 22 Jump Street) and Steve Lightfoot (Marvel's The Punisher, Shantaram). The duo developed the series with Spider-Verse visionaries Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, and Sony's Spider-Man movies producer Amy Pascal, with the trio also serving as executive producers.

"No one else could bring such pathos, pain, and heart to this singular character," Katherine Pope, President of Sony Pictures Television Studios, has said of Cage's Noir character. Vernon Sanders, head of television, Amazon MGM Studios, added that the Oscar-winning Leaving Las Vegas actor and Longlegs star "is an ideal choice for our new superhero."

Gleeson has starred in such dramatic fare as The Banshees of Inisherin, The Tragedy of Macbeth, Braveheart, and Gangs of New York. Along with his role as "MadEye" Moody in several Harry Potter movies, Gleeson's credits include the films Mission: Impossible II and 28 Days Later, and the television series Mr. Mercedes, The Comey Rule, and State of the Union.

Deadpool & Wolverine's New Promo Teases MCU Changes https://comicbook.com/movies/news/deadpool-wolverines-mcu-promo-tva-cassandra-nova-changes/ Tue, 09 Jul 2024 18:31:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 49a6436f-48fe-417f-91ff-9680512ff454

Deadpool & Wolverine teased some big changes for the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the movie's latest TV spot. On social media, Deadpool & Wolverine showed off more of Matthew MacFadyen's Paradox delivering a speech to Wade Wilson. He calls Deadpool "a hero among heroes," or at least he claims he can become one of them. The Time Variance Authority worker also says that the mercenary has been chosen for a "higher purpose" in saving the multiverse. (That sure does sound similar to another MCU favorite who has tangled with the TVA before...) So, the table is set for Ryan Reynolds' hero to tangle with the big bad of the film, Cassandra Nova. You can check out the new teaser down below for yourself.

Another fun nugget from the trailer is that Cassandra Nova, played by Emma Corrin, actually puts those telepathic powers to work against Deadpool & Wolverine. The previous footage of the duo walking into a town set from earlier trailers appears to end with them being blown an entire city block through the front window display of a store. Corrin's villain is on a different level than some of the bad guys that Deadpool has come across in his own universe. By the looks of things, even having a Wolverine handy might not be enough to stop what's coming. Dogpool is also with Wade and Logan at this point as Hugh Jackman's X-Men insults his friend. The hype continues to build until Deadpool & Wolverine's release in just 3 weeks!

The TVA Teases Big Things For Deadpool & Wolverine

If the words Time Variance Authority made you double-take up above, the might be expected. The TVA appeared in Marvel's Loki series. Despite being one of the more popular Marvel TV shows on the streaming platform, some Deadpool & Wolverine viewers might not have made the trek to see Tom Hiddleston's temporal shenanigans. Never fear tho, it's nothing a quick google search or explainer video won't solve. Also, director Shawn Levy told The Associated Press that there won't be any "Marvel Homework" headed into the movie of the summer.

(That's probably just the normal amount of reference and thinking any modern blockbuster series needs to understand the latest installment. Imagine walking into Fast X Part 2 without any prior knowledge of Vin Diesel's car capers and feeling like it was too much to do a quick Intenet search to refresh what went down in Part 1 at least? Silly.)

"I was a good student in school. I'll do my homework as an adult. But I am definitely not looking to do homework when I go to the movies," Levy said earlier this year about the prospect of studying before hitting the theater. "I very much made this film with certainly a healthy respect and gratitude towards the rabid fan base that has peak fluency in the mythology and lore of these characters and this world. But I didn't want to presume that. This movie is built for entertainment, with no obligation to come prepared with prior research."

Spider-Noir Casts New Girl Star Lamorne Morris as Fan-Favorite Spider-Man Character https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/spider-noir-lamorne-morris-spider-man-robbie-robertson/ Tue, 09 Jul 2024 17:54:00 +0000 Timothy Adams 57cae01f-c89b-4010-a1c5-ec9fca24dc7b

Amazon's Spider-Man Noir series has found its Robbie Robertson. Nicolas Cage will play the live-action version of Spider-Man Noir in a Prime Video original series. Fans got to hear Cage voice Spider-Man Noir in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and now will return to the character for his live-action adventures. The series has undergone a few name changes, from Noir to now Spider-Noir, and with that news comes word of a new addition to the streaming show's cast. Deadline reports New Girl star Lamorne Morris has been cast in Spider-Noir as Robbie Robertson.

Fans of the Spider-Man franchise will be very familiar with Robbie Robertson, one of Peter Parker's bosses at the Daily Bugle. While Peter typically has a dicey relationship with J. Jonah Jameson, Robbie Robertson has often been a loyal associate and friend to the wall-crawler. The description of Morris' Robbie Robertson calls him "driven, hard-working, and won't take no for an answer. A dedicated journalist trying to make it with the odds stacked against him as a black professional in 1930s New York, he takes on riskier stories that no one else would touch in order to catch attention and a paycheck. He is willing to do whatever is necessary for his career."

Spider-Man Noir episode count revealed

Nicolas Cage revealed how many episodes the first season of Spider-Noir will consist of. "Forty-five minutes. I mean, it's eight episodes. So it's the equivalent of four movies in five months. And I've got another movie I've gotta prepare for, and then a movie right after it," Cage told The New Yorker.

Eight episodes seem to be the sweet spot when creating TV shows based on comic books. Each season of The Boys has been eight episodes, and Marvel's Disney+ content has been between six and 10 episodes on average.

Spider-Man: Noir Series Episode Count Revealed by Nicolas Cage https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/spider-man-noir-nicolas-cage-series-episode-count-revealed-prime-video/ Tue, 09 Jul 2024 15:14:00 +0000 Aaron Perine f67217d7-287d-4912-9c82-bab7d16348a5

Spider-Man: Noir's episode count has been revealed by Nicolas Cage. The New Yorker sat down with the long-tenured actor to talk about the twists and turns of his career. Spider-Man Noir has been a recent fan-favorite from the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. When the series got announced, there weren't a lot of concrete details, but Cage has cleared some of the air. He said, "Forty-five minutes. I mean, it's eight episodes. So it's the equivalent of four movies in five months. And I've got another movie I've gotta prepare for, and then a movie right after it." So, no rest for the wicked in that respect. But, you have to be thrilled at the prospect of any solo series bringing him back as the character.

As people wonder about what the show will entail, here's an unofficial synopsis for Spider-Man: Noir. This has all been bubbling under the surface since last year at least: "[Noir] will follow an older, grizzled superhero in 1930s New York City. An individual with knowledge of the project says that the show will be set in its own universe and the main character will not be Peter Parker."

"Expanding the Marvel universe with 'Noir' is a uniquely special opportunity and we are honored to bring this series to our global Prime Video customers," Vernon Sanders, head of television for Amazon MGM Studios previously wrote. "The extremely talented Nicolas Cage is an ideal choice for our new superhero and the accomplished producing team with Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Amy Pascal, and the incredible team at Sony is dedicated to expanding this franchise in the most authentic way."

Spider-Man: Noir Rolls Onward At Prime Video

Spider-Man: Noir is ready for a return

One thing has been for certain with this character, fans have been clamoring for a return. Imagine their surprise at the fact that they would be getting an entire minisereies with Spider-Man: Noir. He appeared for a brief second at the end of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Along with that, the tease of Cage coming back to do the voice for the third film is palpable. But, in additon, the prospect of getting standalone adventures in this strange corner of the Marvel multiverse? Well, it's a dream come true for some people out there. The actor himself has talked about how much he loves Noir in previous interviews. That affection comes through in his performances.

"I can say that we have been talking. It's no secret that I love the character," Cage told Collider earlier this year. "I can combine my favorite golden age performances -- i.e. Robinson, Cagney, Bogart -- with a character that is, I guess, widely considered [to be] Stan Lee's masterpiece. I see it as a kind of foray into a pop art mash up of, sort of, a [Jungian] Lichtenstein, mash up by way of Bogart and Cagney, but nothing's definitive yet. It's just conversation."

Deadpool & Wolverine Star in New The Bachelorette Promo https://comicbook.com/movies/news/deadpool-wolverine-ryan-reynolds-hugh-jackman-bachelorette-promo-clip/ Tue, 09 Jul 2024 14:20:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 120b645a-0152-4e0e-87e9-26bd666d2e77

Deadpool & Wolverine's heroes star in a hysterical new TV spot for The Bachelorette. On social media, the movie's accounts showed Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman hyping viewers up for the reality TV mainstay. Deadpool misleads Logan into thinking his participation in The Bachelorette will manage to get him into a meeting with that lucky lady. Because this is Deadpool & Wolverine though, there are even more jokes as Wade Wilson makes sure that the camera zones in on a certain part of his best friend. If you love the roses and superheroes, this whole deal is probably right up your alley. You should check out the full clip down below.

During the run-up to this movie, Hugh Jackman has been very reflective about his journey with Wolvrerine. He never could have dreamed of doing some of these silly bits with Reynolds after all these years. During a fan event in Shanghai, the Logan actor called Deadpool & Wolverine the greatest experience of his long run as the X-Men favorite.

"The experience of making the movie was also one of the greatest of my career, and I've been playing Wolverine for 25 years," Jackman gushed. "This experience exceeded anything I've done before as this character -- and in many other movies, in anything. I loved it. And I think it shows on the screen. You can feel the warmth. The movie has a warmth to it, and it's funny, and it's irreverent, and the action is crazy. But I think you can feel the friendship."

For the last few weeks, Deadpool & Wolverine's international press tour has kicked into high-gear. Across the ocean, Marvel fans have gotten to see Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman hype the movie in-person. All the while, the two friends have been letting fans in on the love fest between them on the road to Deadpool & Wolverine. Whether it's a water bomb fight in Korea or a much drier presentation in China, Reynolds and Jackman have been very open about their passion for this project and how long it's taken to come together. Director Shawn Levy also played a massive role in getting these two characters to the MCU. Here's some of what the lead actor had to say about the experiene of making Deadpool & Wolverine.

"These are my closest friends," Reynolds shared. "So to make a movie together, and to have the experience be something that is easily the best experience of my entire life and incredibly profound... but then for the film to exceed that experience, and be even more special and more emotional than anything that I've ever been a part of and funnier because it's so emotional, it allows so much of that funny to come out in interesting ways."

Deadpool & Wolverine's Ryan Reynolds & Hugh Jackman Tease "Emotional, Hilarious" MCU Movie https://comicbook.com/movies/news/deadpool-and-wolverine-ryan-reynolds-hugh-jackman-mcu-movie-emotional-hilarious/ Tue, 09 Jul 2024 00:36:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo 19f838fc-1c5e-4310-8d1e-d51d741ec7fa

"Emotional," "hilarious," and "mismatched" are just three adjectives that trio Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and Shawn Levy used to describe Marvel Studios' Deadpool & Wolverine. After directing movies led by both actors -- Jackman in Real Steel and Reynolds in Free Guy and The Adam Project -- Levy is reuniting Reynolds' Merc with a Mouth and Jackman's former X-Man for the first time since the Fox-made X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009.

"It's more surprising, but emotional," Reynolds said when asked to characterize the third Deadpool movie in one word during Disney's fan event in Shanghai, China. "Ultimately, the movie is very emotional." Levy offered "mismatched" in reference to the dysfunctional duo, with Jackman opting for "hilarious."

Jackman added that his experience playing this older, yellow-suited Logan variant -- who "let down his entire world," according to Matthew Macfadyen's Time Variance Authority Agent Paradox -- was "one of the greatest of my career, and I've been playing Wolverine for 25 years."

grkmhqga0aamy4h.jpg
(Photo: Disney / Marvel Studios)

"There's a reason it's been six years since the last Deadpool film for me. And that is specifically because in order to make one of these movies properly, it just swallows my whole life," said Reynolds, who also serves as producer and co-writer. "I do nothing but that for at least two years. But to come back and bring these two characters together [is] something people have been asking for as long as I can remember, but something that I've wanted for as long as I can remember, and Hugh has wanted, and Shawn."

The mouth and mind behind Deadpool attributed that sentiment to his friendship with Levy and Jackman, who came out of superhero retirement seven years after 2017's ultra-dark and emotional Logan to make the movie that Reynolds has wanted to make since 2016.

For Levy, that meant blending Deadpool's tone -- subversive, edgy, but with humor that can be as sincerely heartfelt as it is raunchy -- with what audiences expect from the MCU.

"I thought that making my first Marvel movie would be scary, or challenging in new ways, and it was a big task," Levy said. "Because you're telling a big story of anti-heroes who are also heroes. But I have to say: Marvel let us write the script we wanted to write and make the movie we wanted to make. It is an MCU movie -- so it is filled with action, adventure, and big themes -- but it is very faithful to the Deadpool tone, which is audacious, irreverent, and always surprising."

Reynolds and Jackman star alongside returning Deadpool cast members Morena Baccarin, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, Rob Delaney, Brianna Hildebrand, Shioli Kutsuna, and Stefan Kapi?i?, with Succession star Matthew Macfadyen joining the MCU as TVA Agent Paradox and The Crown's Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova. Marvel Studios' R-rated Deadpool & Wolverine opens only in theaters July 26th.

Hugh Jackman Says Deadpool 3 "Exceeded Anything" He's Done in 25 Years as Wolverine https://comicbook.com/movies/news/marvel-deadpool-and-wolverine-hugh-jackman-25-years-x-men-movies/ Mon, 08 Jul 2024 20:15:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo 5ef324c7-7f2c-46bb-acc2-2d0515fda8d1

He's the best there is at what he does -- and Wolverine is the best he's ever been in Marvel Studios' Deadpool & Wolverine, according to Hugh Jackman. The 55-year-old actor played the razor-clawed mutant across nine Fox X-Men movies between 2000 and 2017, including the Wolverine trilogy, which ended with Jackman retiring the claws in the James Mangold-directed Logan. But what was intended to be Jackman's last film as Wolverine was more of an au revoir than adios: as it turns out, Jackman wanted at least one more stab at the character he's played for 25 years.

Jackman phoned his friend and 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine co-star Ryan Reynolds, who was about to put a pin in Deadpool 3 -- the Merc with a Mouth's first movie to be produced under Disney and Kevin Feige's Marvel Studios. With Jackman now on board for the Deadpool/Wolverine team-up that Reynolds first proposed back in 2016, Feige gave the green light with just one condition: Jackman's Wolverine finally suits up in the yellow costume.

"I thought I was finished with it seven years ago," Jackman said during a fan event in Shanghai, China, where Marvel Studios screened 35 minutes of footage for fans. "But as soon as we came up with this idea, I knew that this was the matchup that people wanted, that I wanted, that Ryan wanted, that fans wanted."

deadpool-wolverine-hugh-jackman.jpg

The script -- co-written by Reynolds, director Shawn Levy, Zeb Wells, and Deadpool and Deadpool 2 scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick -- contains "sides of Wolverine that I've never played before, and that challenged me as an actor and excited me," Jackman added. "I feel in many ways fans of Wolverine -- because of Deadpool, because of [Reynolds and Levy], are going to see a fuller, more different side to him than you've seen before. And that was thrilling for me, and I hope it is for you."

Jackman heaped more praise on Reynolds and their mutual collaborator, noting that "what they gave Wolverine is so incredible." Levy worked with Jackman on 2011's Real Steel and Reynolds on 2021's Free Guy and 2022's The Adam Project, making the trio "the best of friends."

The BFFs join the MCU when Marvel Studios' Deadpool & Wolverine opens in theaters July 26th.

Agatha All Along Trailer Reveals Connection to Doctor Strange 2 https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/agatha-all-along-doctor-strange-2-connection-scarlet-witch-death-agatha-spell/ Mon, 08 Jul 2024 18:45:00 +0000 Timothy Adams 0b897efb-f77b-4184-a3da-a4a9ceade91e

Agatha Harkness is tied to the Scarlet Witch in more ways than we initially realized. The Halloween spooky season is being taken over by Agatha All Along, the Disney+ series that sees Kathryn Hahn reprise her role of Agatha Harkness from WandaVision. For those who may not remember, WandaVision concluded with Wanda Maximoff trapping Agatha in a spell that confined her to Westview. The first trailer for Agatha All Along addresses his plot point in an interesting manner while also revealing a key element of how Agatha is still connected to the Scarlet Witch.

Just before the one-minute mark in the new Agatha All Along trailer we see Kathryn Hahn's titular character investigating the death of an unknown witch in a police coroner's office. The tag on the unidentified body magically fills with the name "Wanda Maximoff," with Agatha interrupted by Aubrey Plaza's Rio. "That witch is gone, leaving you trapped in her distorted spell," Rio tells Agatha. This is in reference to the events in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, where Scarlet Witch went rogue after being influenced by the Darkhold. Scarlet Witch was killed in Doctor Strange 2, meaning she's unable to free Agatha from her spell. However, Rio instructs Agatha to "Claw your way out," and we get a glimpse of Agatha gaining her freedom.

Marvel changes title of WandaVision spinoff starring Agatha Harkness

If you're a close follower of all things Marvel, then you're probably aware that Agatha's WandaVision spinoff has undergone quite a few name changes. It's previous subtitles -- Agatha: Coven of Chaos, Agatha: The Darkhold Diaries, Agatha: House of Harkness, and Agatha: The Lying Witch with a Great Wardrobe -- were all red herrings, and the official title is Agatha All Along. Marvel confirmed the Agatha All Along title during its Disney Upfronts Presentation in May, as well as the streaming show debuting with a two-episode premiere on Wednesday, September 18th.

The Agatha: The Lying Witch with a Great Wardrobe title appears to be a fun ode to the fantasy novel The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Not long after the official Marvel Studios account on X (formerly Twitter) shared the key art, the post was quickly deleted.

In addition to Kathryn Hahn, Agatha All Along stars Joe Locke, Sasheer Zamata, Ali Ahn, Maria Dizzia, Paul Adelstein, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Okwui Okpokwasili, with Debra Jo Rupp, with Patti LuPone, and Aubrey Plaza. Marvel's Agatha All Along Plot Details Revealed in New Trailer https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/marvel-agatha-all-along-trailer-synopsis-plot-details/ Mon, 08 Jul 2024 17:20:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo 1868530d-ff0b-4861-9dee-c0c3e6b974cb

Revenge is a witch. Marvel Studios on Monday conjured up the Agatha All Along trailer, and it shows the ancient witch Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) powerless after she attempted to steal Wanda Maximoff's magic in Wandavision. The new Disney+ series -- which is set after the chaos magic-wielding Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) seemingly sacrificed herself to destroy the Darkhold across the multiverse in 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness -- returns to Westview, New Jersey, where Agatha/"Agnes" has been trapped all along.

"That witch is gone, leaving you trapped in her distorted spell," fellow witch Rio Vidal (Aubrey Plaza) tells Agatha in her fantasized reality as a Mare of Easttown-styled detective. "Claw your way out." More than 300 years after she betrayed her Salem coven by practicing the darkest of magic, Agatha is gathering a new coven to walk the Witches' Road.

A new plot synopsis states, "In Agatha All Along, the infamous Agatha Harkness (Hahn) finds herself down and out of power after a suspicious goth Teen (Joe Locke) helps break her free from a distorted spell. Her interest is piqued when he begs her to take him on the legendary Witches' Road, a magical gauntlet of trials that, if survived, rewards a witch with what they're missing. Hahn, Plaza, and Locke (Heartstopper) star in the MCU-set WandaVision spinoff opposite Sasheer Zamata (Saturday Night Live), Ali Ahn (Supernatural), Maria Dizzia (School Spirits), Okwui Okpokwasili (The Exorcist: Believer), Debra Jo Rupp (WandaVision), and stage legend Patti Lupone as Lilia Calderu. WandaVision head writer Jac Schaeffer created the Marvel Television series, which arrives with a two-episode premiere Sept. 18th and runs throughout the Halloween season on Disney+.

"Agatha is really fun, but it's really scary and it gets quite dramatic," Marvel Studios' head of television and streaming, Brad Winderbaum, said on the official Marvel podcast. "She's an amazing anti-hero and that show, it lures you in with the fun of Halloween. And before you know it you're crying. I'll put it to you that way: It's a Marvel brand of scary. It's a Halloween show. There are deadly stakes in this series. It's a fun ride, but it's a dangerous one."

Agatha All Along First Trailer and New Poster Released by Marvel https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/agatha-all-along-trailer-poster-released-marvel/ Mon, 08 Jul 2024 16:40:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 8b31fa71-b64f-4b07-85de-c29eb05dc13a

Today, Disney+ released a new trailer and key art for the upcoming Marvel Television series Agatha All Along, which spins Kathryn Hahn's character, Agatha Harkness, out of the events of the acclaimed Marvel Studios' series WandaVision. In Agatha All Along, "Agatha sets off on a dangerous, mysterious adventure filled with trials and tribulations." That's intentionally opaque, of course, but between the trailer and the official synopsis (seen below), we can probably get a little bit of a sense for where everyone's favorite non-Scarlet witch is headed this time around. The trailer gives us something that looks more like a direct sequel to WandaVision than many probably expected: left powerless and adrift within Wanda's TV fantasies, Agatha starts the trailer as a detective on a police procedural, before being shaken out of her funk by Aubrey Plaza's Rio Vidal.

From there, it seems to be a "getting the band together" kind of story, trying to build up a coven (a "coven of chaos," so to speak) to reclaim her powers. Showrunner Jac Schaeffer, who was the creative force behind WandaVision, directs the pilot episode. Below, you can check out the poster and official synopsis for the series:

In Agatha All Along, the infamous Agatha Harkness finds herself down and out of power after a suspicious goth Teen helps break her free from a distorted spell. Her interest is piqued when he begs her to take him on the legendary Witches' Road, a magical gauntlet of trials that, if survived, rewards a witch with what they're missing. Together, Agatha and this mysterious Teen pull together a desperate coven, and set off down, down, down The Road...

In addition to Kathryn Hahn, Agatha All Along stars Joe Locke, Sasheer Zamata, Ali Ahn, Maria Dizzia, Paul Adelstein, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Okwui Okpokwasili, with Debra Jo Rupp, with Patti LuPone, and Aubrey Plaza. The executive producers are Kevin Feige, Louis D'Esposito, Brad Winderbaum, Mary Livanos and Jac Schaeffer.

Directors for the series include Jac Schaeffer, Rachel Goldberg (Gen V), and Gandja Montiero (The Walking Dead: Dead City). The series boasts a strong lineup, which is important since they are clearly still dipping in and out of different styles of filmmaking at least at the start of the season.

Marvel Television's Agatha All Along will premiere September 18 at 6:00 p.m. PT/9:00 p.m. ET, with the first two episodes on Disney+, then debut one episode per week therafter.

Deadpool & Wolverine: Marvel Shows off 35 Minutes of Footage https://comicbook.com/movies/news/marvel-deadpool-wolverine-footage-35-minutes-ryan-reynolds-hugh-jackman-shawn-levy/ Mon, 08 Jul 2024 02:15:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo 5630e023-4f5f-44bb-a7ee-3d637d22a03c

Marvel Studios' Deadpool & Wolverine will be the first R-rated Deadpool movie to release in China (reportedly with minimal cuts) when it opens day-and-date with the U.S. on July 26th -- and it sounds like the Merc with a Mouth's trademark sense of humor hasn't been lost in translation. Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and director Shawn Levy have been promoting the movie across Asia with stops at the 2024 Waterbomb Festival in Seoul, South Korea, and a 1,000-seat theater in Shanghai, China, where fans in attendance watched 35 minutes of new Deadpool & Wolverine footage that "elicited constant laughter and applause," according to China.org.

The footage, which contained glimpses of Deadpool and Wolverine variants from across the multiverse, also revealed an interaction with a major Marvel character (that won't be spoiled here), according to details that leaked onto Chinese social media. However, Reynolds teased that Deadpool's MCU cameo-filled first entry into a new cinematic universe is holding back the biggest surprises for opening weekend.

"There's so many surprises in the movie we don't want the world to start talking about it before people actually get a chance to see it," Reynolds, accompanied by a translator, told the Shanghai audience. "But those 35 minutes, they cook. They're pretty damn incredible."

"Wait 'til you see the whole thing," Levy added to cheers and applause. "There are a lot of surprises coming for you later this month."

Last month, it was reported that the Chinese Film Bureau-approved cuts are "minimal" and are "due to violence, blood and gore, and language." (Deadpool & Wolverine is rated R by the United States' MPA for "strong bloody violence and language throughout, gore and sexual references.") Although the Fox-made Deadpool didn't release in China in 2016, a version of its R-rated sequel, 2018's Deadpool 2, earned over $40 million at the China box office when the studio released the PG-13 re-edit Once Upon a Deadpool in early 2019.

Reynolds also expressed gratitude that Chinese audiences will be able to watch Deadpool & Wolverine "the way that it is meant to be seen," with Levy assuring fans that Deadpool will maintain its adult tone under Disney.

"This is my favorite Deadpool movie that I've ever been a part of," Reynolds said. "[China] welcomed Deadpool & Wolverine, while allowing us to retain everything that makes Deadpool, Deadpool, and special, and everything that makes Logan so unique and singular and special. To be able to bring a movie like this over here, and to be able to show it in the way that it is meant to be seen, is an extreme privilege for all of us, and not something we take for granted at all. So we're incredibly grateful we got to do this."

"I thought that making my first Marvel movie would be scary, or challenging in new ways, and it was a big task," added Levy, who teamed with Reynolds on Free Guy and The Adam Project, and Jackman on Real Steel. "Because you're telling a big story of anti-heroes who are also heroes. But I have to say: Marvel let us write the script we wanted to write and make the movie we wanted to make. It is an MCU movie, so it is filled with action, adventure, and big themes, but it is very faithful to the Deadpool tone, which is audacious, irreverent, and always surprising."

Reynolds and Jackman star alongside returning Deadpool cast members Morena Baccarin, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, Rob Delaney, Brianna Hildebrand, Shioli Kutsuna, and Stefan Kapi?i?; Succession star Matthew Macfadyen joins the MCU as TVA Agent Paradox, with The Crown's Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova. Deadpool & Wolverine is playing only in theaters July 26th.

Deadpool & Wolverine: Marvel's Kevin Feige Had One Condition for Hugh Jackman Return https://comicbook.com/movies/news/deadpool-and-wolverine-marvel-kevin-feige-one-condition-hugh-jackman-yellow-costume/ Sun, 07 Jul 2024 23:00:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo 3b00f68a-7e93-45b2-b284-5afb3a7ac1af

Kevin Feige would prefer yellow spandex. More than 20 years after James Marsden's black leather-clad Cyclops joked about Wolverine's classic costume in 2000's X-Men, Hugh Jackman will wear the comic-accurate blue and yellow suit from the comics in Marvel Studios' Deadpool & Wolverine. Feige, who was an associate producer on the Fox-made Marvel adaptation that introduced Jackman as the adamantium-clawed mutant, had that one condition for bringing Logan into his Marvel Cinematic Universe alongside Ryan Reynolds' Merc with a Mouth.

"He said, 'Yes, but he wears the yellow. Can he finally wear the yellow?'" Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy told a 1,000-seat theater while promoting the Marvel Studios movie with Reynolds and Jackman in Shanghai, China. "And we began."

Reynolds, who also produced and co-wrote the script with Levy and returning Deadpool and Deadpool 2 scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, explained that he and Levy were ready to put a pin in Deadpool 3 after Marvel turned down a series of pitches. (Rejected ideas included a Rashomon-style story and a no-budget road trip movie with Karan Soni's cab driver Dopinder and no special effects.)

deadpool-wolverine-hugh-jackman-kevin-feige.jpg

Disney's 2019 acquisition of 20th Century Fox was "maybe not the best investment," Reynolds quipped, but it allowed the Deadpool character to cross over into the MCU. The deal happened after Jackman retired the Wolverine role with 2017's Logan, and it looked like Reynolds' efforts to make a Deadpool/Wolverine movie -- an idea that dates back to 2016 -- was never going to happen. (It didn't help that Feige said those exact words.) But then a serendipitous phone call changed everything.

"I had met Kevin Feige six years ago to discuss this, and the first thing I said to him, 'I just want to make Wolverine and Deadpool together. I just want these two together on screen.' At the time, Kevin said, 'Forget it. It's never going to happen,'" Reynolds recalled. "And I said, 'Okay, that's fine.' As we marched inexorably forward, Shawn and I were coming up with different pitches and different ideas, and we pitched Marvel everything you could imagine -- little movies, big movies, anything -- and it wasn't working out."

He continued, "And then one day, we were on our last pitch. We were about to say to Kevin Feige, 'I think we're going to walk away and we'll come back later, maybe in a couple years, when we have a better sense of things.' And Hugh happened to call me." Jackman told Reynolds that, if it wasn't too late, he wanted to come back and do Deadpool 3.

"Shawn and I just pivoted in the middle of our pitch to Kevin and said, 'Look, this thing just happened. It seems kind of miraculous. Hugh called me, what do you say?'" Reynolds said. "And for some reason, Kevin immediately said yes." Levy then noted it was with that one condition: Jackman's Wolverine wears yellow.

Reynolds and Jackman star alongside returning Deadpool cast members Morena Baccarin, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, Rob Delaney, Brianna Hildebrand, Shioli Kutsuna, and Stefan Kapi?i?, with Succession star Matthew Macfadyen joining the MCU as TVA Agent Paradox and The Crown's Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova. Marvel Studios' R-rated Deadpool & Wolverine opens only in theaters July 26th.

Deadpool & Wolverine Star Emma Corrin Addresses Marvel Pressure https://comicbook.com/movies/news/deadpool-wolverine-emma-corrin-cassandra-nova-mcu-marvel-pressure/ Sat, 06 Jul 2024 22:22:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 04955b3b-4151-44de-903a-07a90e88fc06

Deadpool & Wolerine's Emma Corrin addressed the pressure of working on a big Marvel contract. GQ interviewed the Cassandra Nova actor about the upcoming summer blockbuster. While fan perception of the MCU is on the mend. A lot of media pundits still have some skepticism about the future of the franchise. Corrin has heard all that chatter and knows that being associated with low points in these movies can be a bit hard to deal with. However, Deadpool & Wolverine would have to dramatically underperform to come anywhere near that in a few weeks. Ryan Reynolds and director Shawn Levy have seemed to do the impossible with this movie. Fans who were not energized by some of the recent films have come flooding back after Loki Season 2, X-Men '97 and Echo in quick succession. Corrin knows these things have come in cycles.

"There's a lot of pressure on it, but I think that it's the right one at the right time," Corrin told the magazine. "Because it's Deadpool, and Deadpool has always broken the mold, right? That's why Ryan [Reynolds] is a literal genius... While the genre has been incredibly safe, and at the moment, it's on the rocks, people come in and blow it out of the water again."

Cassandra Nova Brings An Edge To Deadpool & Wolverine

Details about Deadpool & Wolverine have been massively downplayed. All fans know is that the Time Variance Authority has recruited Wade Wilson to help with some threat from the multiverse that threatens his own world. In his direct path is Corrin's Cassandra Nova. The powerful telepath hasn't even had a speaking line in the trailers yet. But, public comments from their co-stars have raised the expectation level for the X-Men villain. In particular Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman tease something very sinister about Nova and the motivations at play for this big bad. They told Harper's Bazaar that you could feel the danger in every take.

"It felt like working with a skin-covered Swiss Army knife," Reynolds told the magazine. "Emma brought a Gene Wilder energy to Deadpool & Wolverine. Mischief, danger, unpredictability--from their first scene onward, we understand the villain enough to know why she's motivated to oppose our heroes. And that's because Emma is so fucking excellent at humanizing even the most chaotic lines. The only thing we love more than hating a villain is loving one. And we love Emma's Cassandra Nova from the jump."

Jackman chimed-in with some praise for Corrin's acting chops. "Emma has an ability to so subtly change--to turn on a dime," The Wolverine star added. "There was an effortlessness, a sense of danger."

Deadpool & Wolverine Director Says This Is Not Like Any MCU Movie https://comicbook.com/movies/news/deadpool-wolverine-mcu-shawn-levy-completely-different-movie-r-rating/ Sat, 06 Jul 2024 17:50:00 +0000 Aaron Perine ae8e990a-55c9-41b7-9b1d-2e1aa82b1c49

Deadpool & Wolverine is not like any MCU movie you've seen according to Shawn Levy. The director teased the surprises in store during an interview with Total Film. While the MCU is long-running now, Levy sees Deadpool & Wolverine as an opportunity to expand what this franchise can offer. In the trailer for the upcoming Marvel movie, Deadpool calls himself "Marvel Jesus." This, of course, led to an onslaught of people, saying that the Merc with a Mouth was on the way to save the MCU. The jury is still out on that. (Honestly, an entire phrase that can be tracked back to Google search keywords and YouTube essays about the franchise probably isn't getting solved by one film.) But, Levy is going to give this one the good old college try. He, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman had a blast making this movie and it shows.

"We had no idea it would be this unique moment where people are asking what the MCU means any more," Levy said during their conversation. "Can it surprise us? Can it break molds in ways that we don't expect? We certainly hope that this movie is an answer to those questions."

deadpool-wolverine-tv-spot-bar.jpg
(Photo:

"What Kevin Feige has built with the MCU is historic as far as a string of successes, but culture has its tide chart, culture has ebbs and flows, and one thing we do know is you can't keep doing the same thing ad nauseum and expect people to greet it with the same excitement," Levy added. "And so it just worked out really fortuitously because our movie is not like any MCU movie. Yeah, and I say that as a fan of a lot of MCU movies."

Deadpool Arrives As "Marvel Jesus"

The entire idea about the "Marvel Jesus" line stretches far back to the pandemic. That's how long Deadpool & Wolverine has been in the hopper. But elsewhere in that Total Film cover story, Levy said that he couldn't take credit for the viral line. In fact, the writers and creative team are amused by how it's taken on another meaning entirely among the fans on social media. The momentum behind Deadpool & Wolverine is nothing short of staggering. It looks like Inside Out 2 will be the only big contender for movie of the summer. Luckily for the Marvel movie, the reunion of two massive fan-favorite characters should be enough to seize the day and meet most expectations.

"I would love to take credit for those parallels," Levy shared. "Some we absolutely intend, but some are coincidences, and we came up with 'Marvel Jesus' two years ago. People love to get on bandwagons whether they're positive, but frankly even more when they're negative."

Deadpool Drops a Marvel vs. Capcom 4 Reference https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/deadpool-marvel-vs-capcom-4-reference/ Sat, 06 Jul 2024 17:49:00 +0000 Tanner Dedmon abb7b30c-1bae-4bb8-bb8c-793065658975

The Marvel vs. Capcom series makes for a unique mashup of superpowered heroes, villains, and everyone in between, but it's been awhile since we've gotten a new game in the series. The last game in the series, for example, was Marvel vs: Capcom: Infinite which came out back in 2017 with only an upcoming collection of some of the older games announced since then. The lack of any new Marvel vs. Capcom news hasn't stopped Deadpool himself, however, from dropping a reference to the fictitious Marvel vs. Capcom 4, a game which is one that the fighting game community has been hopeful for over the years.

This Marvel vs. Capcom 4 reference from Deadpool comes courtesy of not the upcoming movie, Deadpool & Wolverine, and is instead found in the latest issue of the current Deadpool comic from writer Cody Ziglar. Deadpool #4 which released on July 3rd features a moment where Deadpool is engaged in an acrobatic shootout. He flips through the air, guns blasting the whole way, before ending up upside down.

Once the smoke clears, Deadpool comments on his high-flying move and says "They should put that move in Marvel vs Capcom 4." The page in question featuring that delivery can be seen below courtesy of Deadpool #4.

Of course, anyone who follows these fighting games and has been hoping for any news regarding new entries in the Marvel vs. Capcom series will know that there's no such thing as Marvel vs. Capcom 4, at least not in any official capacity. Rumors and supposed leaks have tried to say in the past that Marvel vs. Capcom 4 was in development, and it very well might be, but Deadpool's just dropping a cheeky, fourth wall-breaking reference here.

Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite is technically the fourth mainline entry in the series since it followed Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, though it's obviously named differently, so we still haven't gotten a Marvel vs. Capcom 4. There is at least something to look forward to, however, with Capcom announcing earlier this year the release of the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics collection. This release will include Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes and Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes as well as The Punisher, X-Men: Children of the Atom, Marvel Super Heroes, X-Men vs. Street Fighter, and Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter.

Deadpool & Wolverine Director Says Marvel Fans Will Lose Their Minds https://comicbook.com/movies/news/deadpool-wolverine-marvel-shawn-levy-mcu-fans-will-lose-their-minds/ Sat, 06 Jul 2024 14:31:00 +0000 Aaron Perine d4715f5c-e005-4677-b790-1441d964bea4

Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy says that Marvel fans are going to lose their minds at various parts in the movie. SFX Magazine caught up with the filmmaker as Deadpool & Wolverine nears release. He told them that people need to prepare themselves to be surprised by some wild swings during this movie. Levy teased, "There are going to be moments that the audiences are going to love, but I'll also say there are moments where they are going to lose their damn minds - like that times ten billion. Which is not a number, but I'm using it for hyperbole." Elsewhere in that conversation, the filmmaker also talked about the laughs they managed to pack into every scene. You might miss something as the test screenings had people laughing through dialogue.

"There are some moments in this movie that if you can even hear the dialogue over the laughter, we've failed," the director revealed. "We went through this in the edit room, when I'm telling Ryan that every time we show a certain scene you can't hear the three lines because the audience is still laughing at the line that came before. Every time we had this very brotherly debate. Ryan usually won. He's like, 'Great, they'll have to see the movie again!'"

Deadpool & Wolverine Brings The Duo To The MCU

There is doubting that the biggest draw of Deadpool & Wolverine is bringing both of these characters into the MCU proper. Marvel president Kevin Feige has said as much in recent interviews. During his conversation with The Official Marvel Podcast, the head man talked about mixing X-Men elements with what their universe has been doing with the TVA. The result is a ride no one expected before the movie got released. But, one that people are over the moon about because they've been waiting for this for the better part of a decade.

"It was really, really nice the way Shawn Levy, our director, and Ryan were able to come in and embrace the best of what Ryan had pioneered with Deadpool and what Hugh had pioneered on those early X-Men films and bringing them in a very irreverent way, which people are already starting to piece together based on the trailers and the presence of the Time Variance Authority into our sandbox."

"When Hugh came on board, it became very emotional on a personal level for me, because my Marvel career absolutely started 26 years ago in pre-production on the first X-Men film," Feige continued. "I was apart of X-Men 1 and X-Men 2, and really the first three to a certain extent, before we had the honor and privilege of becoming Marvel Studios and developing the MCU. I had not seen Hugh in a while and certainly had not thought about Wolverine or the X-Men as something that we could do ourselves for many, many years."

Original Avengers Stars Reunited to Record a Lakota Audio Track https://comicbook.com/movies/news/original-avengers-stars-reunited-record-lakota-audio-track-dub-disney-plus/ Fri, 05 Jul 2024 23:50:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson d7697c58-c138-4c7c-b933-1c95bf65d453

Marvel fans have a whole new way to experience 2012's The Avengers. After initially being announced earlier this year, an original Lakota language dub of the Marvel Studios film is now available to stream exclusively on Disney+. A new video shared to Marvel's official YouTube channel breaks down the behind-the-scenes process of creating the dub, which was done in partnership with The Lakota Project. The video also reveals that several of The Avengers' cast members -- Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, and Robert Downey Jr. -- have all returned to reprise their roles for the dub.

This is one of several Indigenous language dubs arriving on Disney+ this year, with an Ojibwe language dub of Star Wars: A New Hope set to arrive on the platform at a later date.

What Is The Avengers' Lakota Dub?

According to the official description from Marvel, for the first time in years The Avengers have assembled for an incredible celebration rather than an interstellar confrontation. We give viewers an unforgettable glimpse into the reunion of the original Avengers cast as they team up once more for a noble cause: The Lakota Project. Earth's Mightiest Heroes join together to record and dub the original The Avengers in the native Lakota language, streaming now on Disney+.

"Well, I think it's great because it's a modern representation of our language, it's not something that is like set in the 1800s," Nick Fury voice actor Thomas Draskovic explained in an interview with MPR News. "And I thought that was very important to see that we're current and future changemakers with our language and our cultural revitalization. One of the great things about this recording this stuff was that it was done on the Standing Rock Reservation, it wasn't done in Hollywood or anywhere else. It's actually at Grey Willow Studios that has a state of the art recording studio set up so that we can do this with our own people, with our own sound engineers, and of course, our own speakers. So that's very important."

The Lakota language dub of The Avengers is now available to stream exclusively on Disney+. If you haven't signed up for Disney+ yet, you can try it out here.

Deadpool & Wolverine's Returning X-Men Star Reveals More Details on Villainous Role https://comicbook.com/movies/news/deadpool-wolverine-aaron-stanford-pyro-return-details-mcu/ Fri, 05 Jul 2024 21:34:00 +0000 Timothy Adams df03d7bf-4587-446f-ae40-a3a63a10aa9d

While Deadpool & Wolverine has done a pretty good job keeping some of its big cameos a secret, it's been pretty open about spoiling some other returns. For example, a recent teaser featured Tyler Mane's Sabretooth, and images have revealed the return of Lady Deathstrike, among others. The very first Deadpool & Wolverine trailer gave a quick look at Aaron Stanford reprising his X2: X-Men United and X-Men: The Last Stand villain role of Pyro, and now the actor is speaking out publicly about returning to the X-Men franchise, his time working on Deadpool & Wolverine, and what fans can expect out of the fire-loving Pyro.

Pyro actor Aaron Stanford spoke to Entertainment Weekly about Deadpool & Wolverine, giving away some closely guarded secrets about what he does in the film. "The very first set I saw was this just gigantic desert wasteland with all of these practical set pieces that stretched the length of a football field," Stanford told EW. "I would certainly have expected something like that to be all green screen, but the pains that were taken and the amount of resources and labor that had to go into physically building this world just absolutely astonished me."

The wasteland set that Stanford is referring to appeared in marketing for Deadpool & Wolverine. Pyro is shown as a follower of Emma Corrin's Cassandra Nova, the villain of the X-Men movie. Among the objects shown in the wasteland are a logo for the X-Men's former studio, 20th Century Fox, as well as a giant Ant-Man helmet that serves as Cassandra's headquarters.

Deadpool & Wolverine finally gives Pyro a superhero costume

One of the highlights for Aaron Stanford returning as Pyro in Deadpool & Wolverine is he gets to suit up alongside the other Marvel heroes and villains. As the actor revealed, his Pyro costume is inspired by the Pryo from Marvel's Ultimate Universe.

"I was just very happy to even have a costume," Stanford told EW. "In the original X-Men films, Pyro gets really shortchanged in terms of a costume ... In X2, we start off with Pyro in Xavier's School for Gifted Mutants ... The SWAT team bursts in in the middle of the night and we have to flee. So for half the movie, I'm in my jammies. I never got the cool leather, tactical suit that all the X-Men wear. And in X3, I was just dressed in an ensemble from Hot Topic, basically. So to have him be in a proper superhero costume that was actually taken from the comics themselves was very cool."

What is Deadpool & Wolverine about?

deadpool-wolverine-ryan-reynolds-hugh-jackman.png

In Marvel Studios' Deadpool & Wolverine, Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) will change the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). The film also stars Matthew Macfadyen as Paradox, and Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova, with the return of Deadpool alums Morena Baccarin as Vanessa Carlysle, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Karan Soni as Dopinder, Stefan Kapi?i? as Piotr Rasputin/Colossus, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Rob Delaney as Peter, and Lewis Tan as Shatterstar. Aaron Stanford is returning as Pyro from the X-Men film series, with Jennifer Garner rumored to return as Elektra Natchios.

Kevin Feige, Ryan Reynolds, Shawn Levy and Lauren Shuler Donner produce with Louis D'Esposito, Wendy Jacobson, Mary McLaglen, Josh McLaglen, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, George Dewey and Simon Kinberg serving as executive producers. Deadpool & Wolverine is written by Ryan Reynolds & Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick & Zeb Wells & Shawn Levy. Deadpool & Wolverine will be released exclusively in theaters on July 26th.

Madame Web Star Blames "Internet Culture" for Movie Bombing https://comicbook.com/movies/news/madame-web-emma-roberts-internet-culture-tiktok-reviews-critics-box-office/ Fri, 05 Jul 2024 21:28:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh 6b77a515-34c1-4844-8552-2a88e5875c68

The Spider-Man spinoff Madame Web landed in theaters earlier this year and became a disappointment among both audiences and critics, and while there are many reasons the film fell short of expectations, star Emma Roberts thinks that social media and the "internet culture" of mocking things played a significant part of the film's lackluster performance. With the film starring Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, and Adam Scott, there was a significant amount of excitement about the project in its early stages, though the public perception of the project began to shift once the first trailer was unveiled. From there, things only got worse and its ultimate performance with critics and audiences made it one of the biggest duds of 2024.

"Things work; things don't work. Everyone likes to act like they can predict if they're going to work or they're not. And the truth is, you can't," Roberts shared with Variety. "Things do badly, and then they blow up later on TikTok. Things do well, but then you watch them, and you're like, 'This did well?' There is no secret. It's about doing something goodish and it hitting at the right time. Everything else is like a wish and a prayer. I'm not intimidated by failure, and I'm not intimidated by people having negative thoughts about something."

She continued, "I personally really loved Madame Web. I really enjoyed the movie. I thought everyone in it was great. The director, S.J. Clarkson, I think did an amazing job. She's the reason I wanted to do that movie. If it wasn't for internet culture and everything being made into a joke, I think that the reception would've been different. And that's what bums me out about a lot of stuff, even stuff that I've done, is people just make such a joke out of everything now."

The Internet wasn't alone in lambasting the project, with Sweeney making its failures a punchline when she hosted Saturday Night Live and Johnson largely expressing her disappointment with the changes the project went through after signing on. Still, despite the underwhelming performance of Madame Web, Roberts confirmed she'd be interested in returning to the realm of superheroes.

"I loved getting to just pop in and play Peter Parker's mom, and I loved the director of that movie. I had so much fun," Roberts revealed to ComicBook previously. "I think that playing comic book characters is so fun, I would love to get the chance to play one that maybe gets a little more action."

Stay tuned for updates on the future of Sony's Spider-Man Universe.

Marvel Resurrects a Fan-Favorite MCU Hero in Infinity Stones Event https://comicbook.com/comics/news/marvel-agent-phil-coulson-resurrected-thanos-death-stone-infinity-watch-mcu/ Fri, 05 Jul 2024 18:15:00 +0000 Timothy Adams 01c157e9-d208-4a73-ac62-374c721a8186

One of the fan-favorite figures from the Marvel Cinematic Universe is back from the dead in the comics. The Marvel Universe and the MCU are separate entities, though it's not uncommon to see one influence the other. A major example of this happened when Clark Gregg's Phil Coulson joined a Black Nick Fury in the comics. Agent Coulson died in the MCU and comics, though the MCU brought him back as a central part of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. And now we've reached the point where Agent Phil Coulson's comics return has arrived as well.

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Thanos Annual #1. Continue reading at your own risk!

Thanos Annual #1 comes from the creative team of Derek Landy, Salvador Larroca, Guru-eFX, and VC's Cory Petit, with a backup story by Landy, Sara Pichelli, Mattia Iacono, and VC's Travis Lanham. It kicks off the new "Infinity Watch" crossover that's taking place across Marvel Annuals this summer. It's Thanos Annual's backup story titled "The Death Stone Saga" we're concerned with today. It picks up immediately following the events in the main story in the Thanos Annual, with the new Death Stone leaving Thanos to seek out a human host.

Nighthawk is hot on the trail of the Death Stone, tracking it to a cemetery in Wisconsin using an Infinity Stone scanner. He's confused about there being a new Infinity Stone when there's only been six in existence. When Nighthawk reaches out to grab the stone, it zaps him with a bolt of energy and begins to transform, bringing a skeleton out of its grave and reanimating it. Once the Death Stone enters the chest of the skeleton, it begins forming skin and hair until it takes on the form of the formerly dead Agent Coulson. His gravestone reads, "RIP Phillip 'Cheese' Coulson. He loved heroes and was one."

Whereas Loki killed Phil Coulson in The Avengers, his comic book counterpart met an untimely fate ahead of Marvel's Secret Empire. The event featured a Hydra-influenced version of Captain America attempting to take over the world. Agent Coulson started to distrust Cap, and when our evil Captain America learned of Coulson's snooping, he ordered Deadpool to kill him. Even though Coulson and Deadpool were best buds, Deadpool was loyal to Cap and followed through on those orders.

Coulson also returned during Jason Aaron's tenure on Avengers, serving as a liaison for Mephisto's Squadron Supreme. During the second Heroes Reborn event, Mephisto banished Coulson inside an artifact called the Pandemonium Cube.

"Infinity Watch" spans nine annuals this summer and is spearheaded by writer Derek Landy (Captain America/Iron Man). In addition to writing key chapters of the event, Landy will team up with artist Sara Pichelli on backup stories in each of the nine annuals that follow the creation and pursuit of the mysterious Death Stone-bearer who will be revealed in Thanos Annual #1. "The saga will follow up on previous Infinity Stone stories with the return of recent bearers including Star, Overtime, Prince of Power, Quantum, and Multitude, as well as introduce you to the new Mind Stone-Bearer, Worldmind, for the first time!" Marvel's press release reads. "As they deal with their god-like powers and mistrust from their peers, Thanos, fresh off his own dramatic transformation in Christopher Cantwell's recent Thanos limited series, begins a bloody march to claim his dark destiny once more."

"When you write for Marvel, it's all you can hope for to add your thread to the massive tapestry of stories that has been unfolding since 1961," Landy said. "To be asked, then, to spearhead this next chapter is a prospect beyond my paltry imagination. I get to work on characters I've never written before -- Thanos! Hulk! -- and drag them into the story beside the new generation of heroes like Ms. Marvel and Spider-Boy. Thankfully, there is absolutely no pressure because comic fans are a notoriously easy-going bunch who are prepared to forgive if--oh dear God."

Ryan Reynolds Had One Condition for Deadpool Return https://comicbook.com/movies/news/deadpool-wolverine-ryan-reynolds-shawn-levy-mcu-return-one-condition/ Fri, 05 Jul 2024 16:47:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 66daf655-4e57-4598-ad01-4fdf1d2f7bcc

Deadpool & Wolverine star Ryan Reynolds had one condition for his return as Deadpool. SFX Magazine managed to lear about the secret from director Shawn Levy. The Free Guy filmmaker explained that Reynolds was only going to come back as Deadpool if Levy was the person behind the camera. He enjoyed their time on The Adam Project so much that he wanted to keep the fun going. It also helps matters that Reynolds, Levy an Hugh Jackman have a longstanding friendship that would help them bring the Wolverine actor back into the fold. (Other recent interviews have seen the filmmaker admit that he wanted a crack at Logan ever since he was offered The Wolverine and didn't jump at the chance. Here's what the director said about Reynolds' demands for Deadpool & Wolverine.

"So I'm shooting The Adam Project with Ryan up in Vancouver," Levy recalled. "And he says, 'Okay, I know you're going to say no, but I'll only do Deadpool again if you direct it.' I told him I'd love to direct that movie, because the truth is, if you work in the big-canvas filmmaking space, as I have since those Night at the Museum movies, it's a dream to be able to tell a story on that kind of epic and anthemic canvas."

The director would go on to say, "I've always been a fan of Marvel movies, and I was already a fan of Deadpool and a huge fan of Wolverine, so the opportunity to join the Deadpool franchise but to do something notably different was compelling."

Deadpool & Wolverine Morphed Into Something Bigger When Jackman Signed On

Hugh Jackman finally told Reynolds and Levy yes.

Levy has mentioned something of the sort before. His relationship with not only Reynolds, but Jackman too has come into focus over the course of the media tour for Deadpool & Wolverine. He's been such a fan of Marvel characters and his two stars' different stint in the universe. So, when the opportunity to get Wolverine into the mix arose, he leaped at the chance to really cash-in on the entire wishlist. The result is a movie that fans think is going to make their wildest dreams come true. Levy told Deadline everything changed when Jackman decided to accept their offer to come aboard.

"And that was before I knew we would get the greatest gift imaginable for a Deadpool movie, which is Hugh Jackman saying, 'I'm in. I want in,'" Levy mused. "And when it became Deadpool & Wolverine, it became a whole different story, and the majesty of the movie, the fun of the movie, the story potential of the movie changed completely. Because then it becomes a descendent of the great buddy, at each other's throats, shoved together through circumstance genre."

Ryan Reynolds Teases Next Project With Hugh Jackman https://comicbook.com/movies/news/deadpool-wolverine-ryan-reynolds-hugh-jackman-tease-next-project/ Fri, 05 Jul 2024 15:55:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 9bec0988-a9b8-4c19-9363-7d78a27d11ae

Deadpool & Wolverine is coming in a few weeks, but Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman already have their eyes on the next project together. The Deadpool actor talked to Entertainment Weekly about his upcoming MCU debut. During that conversation, Reynolds mentioned that he and Jackman have a project that they're already teeing up. Now, this one won't happen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But, people tend to enjoy seeing the real-life best friends together in any sort of setting. Judging by the box office buzz already percolating around Deadpool & Wolverine, some company will probably be all too willing to reunite the pair for basically anything they want to do. As always, the actor credits their longstanding friendship's success to communication and a willingness to root each other on as much as possible.

"We have one we're looking to do soon. I would say that [ours] is like any relationship that is successful and works: It's that two parties are rooting for each other," Reynolds explained. "I'm always rooting for Hugh to score and win. I also know the infinite nuance of his heart and his mind and who he is. I can say firsthand that he's a person who's not just worth rooting for, he's somebody who's impossible to not root for."

Deadpool & Wolverine Puts The Spotlight On A Special Friendship

Reynolds and Jackman being reunited as their Marvel characters has been a dream come true for fans. But, for the actors themselves, this has been a wild ride that feels even more special because of their bond. For People Magazine, Deadpool & Wolverine's biggest names sat down to break down what's kept them going through their stint in Hollywood. It turns out this friendship is one that has encouraged the best in both men. There's a selflessness at play that just can't be denied when it comes to Jackman and Reynolds.

"I think the secret sauce to a long-lasting Hollywood friendship is not too dissimilar to having a partner or a marriage," Reynolds told his best friend. "Since the day I met Hugh Jackman, I am genuinely rooting for you, all the time. I want you to win. I know you to be a person that often puts others in front of yourself. It's not a show. I see you do it in quiet, I see you do it in loud and in every instance. I think of you as this guy that will grab the ticking time bomb and fly away into the atmostphere in space and let it explode. Saving all the people in the world. 'Oh god, he saved us again. He did it again.'..."

"I so admire those qualities in you and love that in you," the Deadpool star continued. "Since the day we met in Sydney, I root for you. I want you to live the most full-throated life that you can possibly live. It's the same way I feel about Blake. As I'm rooting for her, I know she's rooting for me, and it's why we're so connected."

Iron Fist Star Finn Jones Still Wants a Heroes for Hire MCU Series With Luke Cage https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/iron-fist-finn-jones-heroes-hire-mcu-series-luke-cage-mike-colter/ Fri, 05 Jul 2024 15:13:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw af5d2f94-491c-434e-b8f0-a7b919d35185

Iron Fist star Finn Jones hasn't given up hope that he can still do a Marvel Heroes for Hire project with Luke Cage star Mike Colter.

Jones was doing an interview with The Nerd Shepherd at Heroes Dutch Comic-Con in the Netherlands. The interview got into the question of where Jones is in his career right now, and what he might do next as an actor. The former Iron Fist star made it clear that the industry is in a state of flux right now, and what could or could not happen is impossible to predict - including whether or not he could return to playing Marvel's Iron Fist:

"I have no expectations in this industry, especially right now," Finn Jones said. "It's really unprecedented - strikes, COVID. Things you think are going to happen don't happen; things that shouldn't happen do happen. So to be an actor in 2024 To have expectations in this industry is just impossible."

Iron Fist was part of the Marvel Netflix Universe of the 2010s, which helped lay much of the groundwork for the current Marvel Studios Disney+ series. The Marvel Netflix Daredevil TV series is officially continuing as Daredevil: Born Again, with actors Charlie Cox (Daredevil), Vincent D'Onofrio (Kingpin), Jon Bernthal (Punisher), and supporting cast members all coming over to the MCU. There have been rumors that Krysten Ritter's Jessica Jones will pop up in Born Again, cementing her place in the MCU, as well.

Admittedly, actor Mike Colter has been less enthusiastic about continuing as Luke Cage, but Finn Jones made it clear he's open to continuing as Danny Rand, Marvel's Iron Fist:

"Now, my intention - I would like to see the character continue; I would like to continue playing that character. I think there's still a lot of room for growth and professionally I'm at a point where I would like to continue to grow with Iron Fist ."

finn-jones-iron-fist-luke-cage-heroes-for-hire-mcu-series.jpg
(Photo: Marvel/Netflix)

One of the most famous partnerships in Marvel Comics was Luke Cage and Iron Fist's "Heroes for Hire" business. The two street-level heroes sold their services to those in need, often using their odd-coupled powers (Luke's unbreakable skin and strength, Danny's martial arts precision and power fist) in perfect unison. Finn and Colter got to play out a bit of the partnership onscreen, but never got the full-fledged Heroes for Hire spinoff a lot of fans wanted. Finn Jones acknowledged that he would enjoy a shot at doing Heroes for Hire in the MCU:

"That would be nice. I would love to see the chemistry between me and Mike again. It's always been great. I think they're interesting characters to bring together. I think there's a lot of great stories that can be told with those characters. And if If they brought me and Mike back to do a Heroes for Hire TV series, I think it would be the right way to go."

Iron Fist was looked at as being the weakest of the Marvel Netflix series - and yet, a lot of fans felt that seeing Jones and Colter together would've balanced out both characters and their respective series, creating a greater sum than the parts. When we spoke to Mike Colter, he was at least willing to say that if he got a project that was significant, he may be willing to put that Luke Cage hoodie back on:

"I mean, I would totally entertain a good script and idea that made sense," Colter said.

Heroes for Hire could be that project.

Until then, Iron Fist is streaming on Disney+.

Deadpool & Wolverine: Image Offers New Look at Returning X-Men Villain https://comicbook.com/movies/news/deadpool-wolverine-x-men-villain-lady-deathstrike-image-mcu/ Fri, 05 Jul 2024 13:43:00 +0000 Timothy Adams 23ab78a4-587d-48cf-a530-8d6055ac907f

An X-Men villain is one of the many cameos expected in Deadpool & Wolverine. The first X-Men movie to fall under Marvel Studios is expected to have many surprises for longtime fans, though the running rumor of Taylor Swift portraying X-Man Dazzler was recently debunked. The only villain confirmed for Deadpool & Wolverine is Emma Corrin's Cassandra Nova, who is the twin sister of X-Men founder Charles Xavier. However, Deadpool & Wolverine trailers, TV spots, and images have provided new glimpses at other characters, including a villain from 2003's X2: X-Men United.

Entertainment Weekly released a cover story for Deadpool & Wolverine that included several photos from the movie. One photo in particular focused on Cassandra Nova, but there are several figures standing behind her in fighting stances. The woman with extended claws coming out of her fingertips is Yuriko Oyama, aka Lady Deathstrike. Kelly Hu played Lady Deathstrike in X2: X-Men United, but it appears a different actor will take on the role. Perhaps a scheduling conflict prevented Kelly Hu from returning for Deadpool & Wolverine, or her representatives and Marvel Studios couldn't agree on terms. She stated in 2022 that she'd like to return as Lady Deathstrike in the MCU. Either way, Lady Deathstrike will be throwing down with Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine.

Shawn Levy was close to adding The Flash to Deadpool & Wolverine on the list of superhero movies he's helmed. The Deadpool & Wolverine director is quickly becoming a hot commodity, with rumors swirling that Marvel Studios is eyeing him to direct Avengers 5. Deadpool & Wolverine is one of the most anticipated movies of the year, and is the only release from Marvel Studios after it made changes to its calendar. What some comic book fans may not have known was Shawn Levy almost directed The Flash, one of the last films to release under the old DC Films regime.

"I get offered some IP-based movie every week, and, as you've noticed from a lack of announcements, I pretty much always turn them down because I need to feel that I see a story worth telling," Shawn Levy told Entertainment Tonight. There was mention of Levy's resume being light on sequels and more focused on original content like Date Night, This Is Where I Leave You, and The Internship. Levy then admitted that he was considered for The Flash director starring Ezra Miller, but that was "a brief moment in time."

What is Deadpool & Wolverine about?

Deadpool & Wolverine: Ryan Reynolds Hilariously Trolls Hugh Jackman With Old Video https://comicbook.com/movies/news/deadpool-and-wolverine-ryan-reynolds-trolls-hugh-jackman-oklahoma-billboard/ Thu, 04 Jul 2024 21:55:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo f8344d59-d364-40dc-885b-245f03186ae5

Oh, what a beautiful mornin', what a beautiful day for trolling. Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman's international press tour for Marvel Studios' Deadpool & Wolverine kicked off in Shanghai, where the stars joined director Shawn Levy to promote the MCU movie ahead of its Chinese release on July 26th. The trio's second stop was Seoul, South Korea, where Reynolds "hijacked" a billboard above the Gwanghwamun Post Office. Reynolds shared a video, below, of the billboard displaying a pre-X-Men Jackman performing the song "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'" in his breakout role as cowpoke Curly in the 1998 revival of Rodgers & Hammerstein's Oklahoma!

"I made a billboard. I stole -- I hijacked a billboard for Hugh," Reynolds says in the video he posted to Instagram with the caption, "Enjoy every second. They grow up fast."

The faux "feud" between Reynolds and Jackman, who starred together in 2009's Fox-made X-Men Origins: Wolverine, dates back to 2016. Not long after Reynolds returned as the Merc with a Mouth in 2016's Deadpool, Jackman officially retired from the Wolverine role in 2017's Logan. Reynolds then publicly campaigned to coax his one-time co-star out of superhero retirement for a Deadpool/Wolverine movie.

"I want Deadpool and Wolverine in a movie together. What we're gonna have to do is convince Hugh," Reynolds told EW in 2016. "Hugh Jackman is one of the best human beings. Part of the reason I want to do a Deadpool/Wolverine movie is not just because I think the two would light the screen on fire, but I genuinely love the guy."

While promoting a still Jackman-less Deadpool 2 in 2018, Reynolds joked that the Reynolds-Jackman "war" was "just a long-term hazing campaign that's only going to get worse...until he says yes [to Deadpool/Wolverine]."

"I think convincing Hugh of that would be a near-impossible feat, but there's no human being I love more than Hugh Jackman in that universe, and equally so as a friend. He's just the best," Reynolds told EW at the time. "I already miss him as Logan, so I'm one of those guys that whenever I see him, I'm like, 'Come on, man. Just one more. Come on. We'll do it together. It'll be fun. Come on! On three. Here we go, together. One, two, three, together,' and it's always just me saying it."

One, two, three -- Deadpool & Wolverine are finally together when Marvel Studios' first R-rated movie hits theaters on July 26th. Starring alongside Reynolds and Jackman are returning Deadpool cast members Morena Baccarin, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, Rob Delaney, Brianna Hildebrand, Shioli Kutsuna, and Stefan Kapi?i?, with Succession star Matthew Macfadyen joining the MCU as TVA Agent Paradox and The Crown's Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova.

Captain America: Brave New World Star Anthony Mackie Shares New Photo for July 4th https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/captain-america-brave-new-world-anthony-mackie-new-photo-for-july-4th-cap-suit/ Thu, 04 Jul 2024 20:36:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 49c9c19c-abe0-4a6b-a329-9dd0f33ea024

Captain America: Brave New World is finally hitting theaters next year, and the film is set to star Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Captain America. Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) passed the Cap torch to Sam at the end of Avengers: Endgame in 2019, and Mackie officially suited up as the hero in Disney+'s The Falcon and the Winter Solider back in 2021. In honor of Independence Day, Mackie has taken to social media to share a new photo from Captain America: Brave New World. July 4th may be Steve Rogers' birthday, but we're excited to spend the holiday celebrating the newest onscreen Cap.

"Happy Birthday America! Have a great 4th, see you soon...," Mackie captioned the post. You can view the image he shared below:

"It kind of brought my Marvel experience full circle because we shot in D.C. at the same hotel that we shot Winter Soldier at," Mackie said of the film in a previous interview with The Wrap. "One of my first Marvel scenes was me sitting at a table talking to the senator and me and Chris [Evans] and Scarlett [ Johansson] kidnapping him and we go back and we stay at the same hotel and we shot at that same area. So, in that regard, it was really emotional to think how far my character has come and where he is now after the 10 years that I've been in the MCU."

Captain America: Brave New World will follow the new adventures of Sam Wilson/Captain America (Anthony Mackie) following the events of The Falcon and Winter Soldier. The film will also star Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres/Falcon, Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley, Liv Tyler as Betty Ross, and Shira Haas as Sabra. Xosha Roquemore, Seth Rollins, and Rosa Salazar have been cast in currently undisclosed roles. Giancarlo Esposito was also added to the cast as an unknown villain during reshoots.

Captain America: Brave New World wrapped principal photography before the WGA and SAG strikes last year, but the film's post-production was delayed. In December, Matthew Orton (Moon Knight) was hired to work on the new pages. Though reshoots once meant a film was performing poorly in test screenings, Marvel Studios has always scheduled additional photography to clarify questions that come up with test audiences.

"'Reshoots' was a bad word. 'Oh this movie's in reshoots, there must be a problem,'" Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige previously said of the process.

However, it's not exactly common for a film to add a new villain played by a big actor this late in the process. It seems likely that Esposito is eventually getting his own series, but is being introduced in Cap 4. We can only hope this is a positive for the production.

Stay tuned for more updates about Captain America: Brave New World, which is currently scheduled to be released on February 14, 2025.

Original Fantastic Four Star Would "Jump at the Chance" to Join the MCU https://comicbook.com/movies/news/marvel-fantastic-four-jessica-alba-invisible-woman-mcu-role/ Thu, 04 Jul 2024 20:15:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo 3f384a57-97aa-4043-825c-54c4d290b734

Jessica Alba can see herself in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Between 2005 and 2007, the Trigger Warning actress starred as Sue Storm, a.k.a. the Invisible Woman, in two Fox-made Fantastic Four movies opposite Chris Evans, Ioan Gruffudd, and Michael Chiklis. With Hugh Jackman reprising his X-Men role in Marvel Studios' Deadpool & Wolverine -- a cameo-filled, fourth wall-breaking romp into the multiverse set to bring back other characters and original actors from the Fox-verse -- Alba says she, too, would return to the Marvel family.

"I loved those movies and [it] also changed my life, that series," the Fantastic Four star said in an Entertainment Tonight rETrospective. "No one has talked to me about [a return], but I would jump at the chance." Alba added: "I loved that character and I felt like she was so unique in the Marvel universe at the time. There weren't kind of female superheroes like her."

Besides Jackman's X-Man, returning for the first time since 2017's Logan, Disney and Marvel Studios brought back Patrick Stewart's Professor X for 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Kelsey Grammer's Beast -- who last appeared in 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand -- for an unexpected post-credits cameo in 2023's The Marvels. More X-Men stars are confirmed for Deadpool & Wolverine, which is also said to feature an appearance by -- spoiler alert -- Jennifer Garner's Elektra Natchios, the sai-wielding assassin from Fox's Daredevil (2003) and Elektra (2005).

Marvel Studios will reboot The Fantastic Four with Vanessa Kirby (Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning) in the role of Susan Storm, Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us) as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Joseph Quinn (A Quiet Place: Day One) as Sue's brother, Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Bear) as Ben Grimm/the Thing. MCU architect Kevin Feige is producing the new adaptation from director Matt Shakman (WandaVision), which is slated to open in theaters on July 25th, 2025.

fantastic-four-jessica-alba-invisible-woman-sue-storm.jpg

Though Alba received a Razzie Award nomination for her role as Sue Storm, the Sin City star has "nothing but fond memories" of the 2005 Fantastic Four movie and its 2007 sequel, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.

"I loved it so much, playing that character. I feel like my whole life started in a lot of ways at that moment," Alba told ComicBook in an interview for her new Netflix movie, Trigger Warning. "I met my life partner, we're still together, we have three kids. Tim Story, who directed, is still one of my best friends. We have New Year's Eve together. It was great."

The Invisible Woman "was such a cool, inspiring character and ahead of her time, I would say, in the genre," Alba added. "And still, you still haven't seen someone who is so nurturing and feminine, but then also a fearsome badass. I haven't seen that combination again. And so I think she still fills this beautiful kind of space or void in the Marvel universe."

Marvel Announces Venom War: It's Jeff (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/comics/news/marvel-venom-war-its-jeff-announcement/ Thu, 04 Jul 2024 16:39:00 +0000 Timothy Adams 3332c87f-db98-4fe4-8253-735b67ac437a

Jeff the Land Shark is about to be the next victim of Venom War. The symbiote-fueled event of 2024 will pit father vs. son, as Eddie and Dylan Brock go to war over who is the one, true Lethal Protector. Venom War will stretch its tendrils across the Marvel Universe, with several miniseries and tie-ins already announced. Marvel isn't limiting Venom War to just Earth's Mightiest Heroes, however, as Marvel's goodest boy Jeff the Land Shark joins the festivities. Fans have witnessed Jeff the Land Shark's adventures in the Infinity Comics on Marvel Unlimited, but his next big quest takes place inside the Venom War event.

ComicBook can exclusively reveal Venom War: It's Jeff #1 by writer Kelly Thompson and artist Gurihiru. The fan-favorite creative team is behind It's Jeff's hit Infinity Comic, and according to Thompson, they're excited to continue their collaboration while getting to work with some surprising guest stars.

"It's pure joy to work with Gurihiru on anything, and our It's Jeff collaborations are always extra fun," Thompson said in a statement. "But I confess that getting the chance to tell a longer and more complex story -- with an all-star supporting cast in Kate Bishop, Gwenpool, and American Chavez -- was an unexpected treat. And seeing another side of Jeff in this story as we do, felt like a really fun expansion of the character."

The description for Venom War: It's Jeff #1 reads, "WHAT'S EATING JEFF...AND WHAT'S JEFF EATING?!? That's right--the crossover event of the summer finally reaches the real star of Marvel Comics--Jeff the Land Shark! When Jeff's night of fun is interrupted by the madness of the Venom War, is Marvel's goodest boy going to be able to keep his cool? Or...will he give in to the symbiote's temptations and EAT SOMEONE'S BRAINS?!?! The team behind the hit Infinity Comic brings us an over-sized all-new tale of the world's cutest predator!"

The cover by Gurihiru features Jeff sitting by a mirror on the floor, looking at different superhero costumes to try on. In Jeff's fins are Spider-Man's costume, and we can see costumes for Captain America, Wolverine, Deadpool, the Fantastic Four, Captain Marvel, Thor, Gwenpool, and Black Panther. However, lurking behind Jeff is a Venom symbiote ready to devour our favorite shark.

"LAST VENOM STANDING! The Venom Symbiote has bonded with both Eddie Brock and his son Dylan at different points. Now both Brocks are going head-to-head, determined to be the one, true Venom!" Marvel's description of Venom War reads. "Father versus son in a showdown of showdowns that threatens to tear the world asunder! From heavyweight talent champions Ewing and Coello comes a Battle for the 'Biote like you've never seen!"

"This is what we've been building to since the start of this wild and way-out symbiote odyssey - the fateful confrontation between father and son!" Venom writer Al Ewing explained. "Where better to have it than inside the squared circle? And who better to bring this all-action epic to the page with than my old buddy Iban Coello? I'm tellin' ya, goo believer -- this is vehemently varied Venom violence like never viewed, and only one host can wear the symbiote when the dust settles! Who's it gonna be?"

Marvel's Wolverine Joins The Nova Corps https://comicbook.com/comics/news/marvel-wolverine-nova-corps-annihilation-2099/ Thu, 04 Jul 2024 15:01:00 +0000 Timothy Adams 9590c417-3ae9-45e9-89d1-41aee44c737a

The intergalactic Nova Corps can now add Wolverine to its list of esteemed members. While Logan is famously known as one of the most popular members of the X-Men, he's also been an Avenger alongside Spider-Man when Brian Michael Bendis rebooted Earth's Mightiest Heroes. As for Nova, some of the mantle's most popular characters are Richard Rider and Sam Alexander. But one good thing about alternate timelines is they allow creators to examine characters under a different lens, and that's what is taking place with Marvel's 2099 future timeline. The latest event brings back the Annihilation title while also giving Wolverine a new moniker and mission statement.

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Annihilation 2099 #1. Continue reading at your own risk.

Annihilation 2099 #1 comes from the creative team of Steve Orlando, Ibraim Roberson, Neeraj Menon, Dale Eaglesham, Ra?l Angulo, and VC's Cory Petit. The issue doesn't really hide the fact that Wolverine is playing the part of Nova 2099, with his internal dialogue referencing a healing factor and his general physical appearance. Logan is the last Nova Corpsman in the cosmos, with the full power of the Nova Force at his disposal. And he is forced to use it against a gang of Knull followers.

The outlaws ride into a city feasting on the innocent citizens until Wolverine steps in. Just as it looks like they'd killed Wolverine, his healing factor kicks in and he uses his Adamantium claws to slice the head off the Knull set's leader, Murk. Logan then uses the Nova Force to obliterate the remaining symbiotes. Instead of sticking around for congratulations from one of the local bartenders, Wolverine as Nova flies off to continue roaming the stars.

How did Wolverine become Nova?

While the logistics of why Wolverine ended up on Xandar are blurry, we do know it involved losing an eye and an arm in a fight with Hulks. The wounds Wolverine suffered weren't healing, and the Nova Corps said they'd help. The galactic police force was starting a new program that infused living cells with the Nova Force, and Logan was their first lab rat. Instead of merely having 37 trillion cells in his body, Wolverine had 37 trillion tiny suns under his skin.

Before they could get to Phase Two, exo-parasites attacked Xandar looking to feast on the Nova Force. The exo-parasites infected every single person on Xandar except for Wolverine, who was forced to kill them before the alien infection spread across the galaxy. Wolverine carries the weight of his actions, and it's reminiscent of how Old Man Logan mistakenly murdered the X-Men due to the machinations of Mysterio.

Despicable Me 4 Director Explains Fantastic Four-Inspired Mega Minions https://comicbook.com/movies/news/despicable-me-4-director-explains-fantastic-four-inspired-mega-minions/ Thu, 04 Jul 2024 01:11:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 24bdd846-538b-4d0f-a496-5899140c6bea

Despicable Me 4 is heading to theaters this weekend, and the new animated film has some fun nods to Marvel. It was revealed in a trailer that the new movie will introduce "Mega Minions," a team of five Minions "with incredible power" and "zero responsibility." In a recent video by Illumination, franchise star Steve Carrell (Gru) poked fun at superhero movies by introducing Illumination's "Megaverse." While the Megaverse may not be real, the Mega Minions were actually inspired by the Fantastic Four. Despicable Me 4 co-directors Chris Renaud and Patrick Delage recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly about pulling inspiration from Marvel's first family. For example, the Mega Minions will include a rock-like Minion similar to The Thing and a stretchy Minion like Mr. Fantastic.

"So, when we started, [the Minions] were more part of the story in Mayflower, the nice town, and they were sort of hanging out on yachts, and I think they were in Vegas for part of the time," Renaud explains. "They had this kind of well-to-do lifestyle that they were living, but there wasn't really enough comedy in it. So then we started talking about them working at the AVL and having the opportunity for them to go be agents for the AVL, which we thought was fun."

"I know for me, I was definitely thinking about simple powers that are very graphic and easily understood. We talked about a lot of things, but I think knowing the amount of screen time we had, which wasn't much, [we went with] very kind of archetypal powers sort of in the vein and the look of the Fantastic Four," he added. "So their powers aren't exactly the Fantastic Four, but one thing that I like as a comparison to that group is the Fantastic Four powers are slightly goofy ... The Invisible Woman, the fire guy, the rock guy, there's something about it. It works great as a comic, but the visual and graphic sensibility of those powers really lent themselves to the Minions."

"In other words, with the Minion who stretches - that's Tim, who's our big tall guy - and so it makes sense [for him]," Renaud added. "And of course, Mel, with the laser beam powers, he's a one-eyed guy with a goggle, and then the goggle extends. So it was looking at ways that even some of the design as a normal minion, how that design could lead to what their superpower might be."

You can read Illumination's description of Despicable Me 4 here: "Following the 2022 summer blockbuster phenomenon of Illumination's Minions: The Rise of Gru, which earned almost $1 billion worldwide, the biggest global animated franchise in history now begins a new chapter as Gru (Oscar(R) nominee Steve Carrell) and Lucy (Oscar(R) nominee Kristen Wiig) and their girls -Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier) and Agnes (Madison Polan)-welcome a new member to the Gru family, Gru Jr., who is intent on tormenting his dad.

Gru faces a new nemesis in Maxime Le Mal (Emmy winner Will Ferrell) and his femme fatale girlfriend Valentina (Emmy nominee Sofia Vergara), and the family is forced to go on the run.

The film features fresh new characters voiced by Joey King (Bullet Train), Emmy winner Stephen Colbert (The Late Show with Stephen Colbert), and Chloe Fineman (Saturday Night Live). Pierre Coffin returns as the iconic voice of the Minions and Oscar(R) nominee Steve Coogan returns as Silas Ramsbottom.

Packed with non-stop action and filled with Illumination's signature subversive humor, Despicable Me 4 is directed by a co-creator of the Minions, Oscar(R) nominee Chris Renaud (Despicable Me, The Secret Life of Pets), and is produced by Illumination's visionary founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and by Brett Hoffman (executive producer, The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Minions: The Rise of Gru). The film is co-directed by Patrick Delage (animation director Sing 2 and The Secret Life of Pets 2), and the screenplay is by the Emmy-winning creator of White Lotus, Mike White, and the veteran writer of every Despicable Me film, Ken Daurio."

Despicable Me 4 is now playing in theaters.

Deadpool & Wolverine Merch Shows New Look at Deadpool Variants https://comicbook.com/movies/news/deadpool-and-wolverine-marvel-deadpool-corps-kidpool-babypool/ Thu, 04 Jul 2024 00:30:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo ef55462a-870a-40a6-bf20-2aa82e5a12f3

Now this is Merch with a Mouth. For months, Marvel Studios has been rolling out a line of movie-based Deadpool & Wolverine merchandise -- everything from Funko figures to Hasbro Marvel Legend action figures and fashion collabs with such retailers as Hot Topic and Box Lunch. Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and Wolverine's (Hugh Jackman) cameo-filled entry in the MCU has mostly kept its secrets regarding the multitude of characters rumored to appear (cameos are "peppered in throughout," allows director Shawn Levy, who added that "there's a lot of characters"), but Marvel's multiverse movie is (ahem) wading into the 'Pool-verse.

Potential spoilers ahead: First, an official image unleashed Dogpool, Wade Wilson's costumed canine companion. (In the comics, the Merc with a Bark is a mutated dog named Wade from Earth-103173.) Then a TV spot offered a glimpse at Lady Deadpool, who, in a bit of appropriately-meta casting, is speculated to be Blake Lively, Reynolds' real-life wife. (In the comics, Lady D is Earth-3010's Wanda Wilson, a self-described "sexier than Nic Cage" masked mercenary.)

And then there's the trailer where a variant Logan (Jackman) says to someone off-screen: "Trust me, kid, I'm no hero." That fueled speculation that "kid" is Wolverine's daughter, Laura/X-23 (Logan's Dafne Keen), but it's likely Kidpool, a watergun-wielding kiddie 'pool (get it?) who has his own Funko! Pop figure. Deadpool & Wolverine Funkos have also revealed Babypool (complete with adorable Deadpool binky -- move over, Baby Yoda!) and Headpool, a decapitated Deadpool's zombified head.

You can pre-order the above wave of Deadpool & Wolverine Funko Pops here on Amazon or at Entertainment Earth.

In the comics, a dimension-hopping Wade Wilson from Earth-616 recruited "alternaverse Deadpools" from across the multiverse to form the Deadpool Corps and save the universe. Lady Deadpool, Kidpool, Dogpool, and Headpool all first appeared in the five-issue Prelude to Deadpool miniseries in 2010, and the five 'Pools officially assembled in the Deadpool Corps series that ran for 12 issues between 2010 and 2011.

Starring alongside Reynolds and Jackman are returning Deadpool cast members Morena Baccarin, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, Rob Delaney, Brianna Hildebrand, Shioli Kutsuna, and Stefan Kapi?i?, with Succession star Matthew Macfadyen joining the MCU as TVA Agent Paradox and The Crown's Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova. Marvel Studios' Deadpool & Wolverine is only in theaters July 26th.

Deadpool & Wolverine Debuts New Dogpool Billboard https://comicbook.com/movies/news/deadpool-wolverine-dogpool-billboard-new-ryan-reynolds-hugh-jackman-mcu/ Wed, 03 Jul 2024 21:47:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 99e9d864-5984-4247-a688-bb10583461a9

Deadpool & Wolverine newest billboard puts the spotlight on Dogpool. As the summer movie scene continues to heat up, Marvel's big blockbuster knows that people love dogs, especially when they're helping save the Multiverse. The new billboard sees the tiny canine with goggles on getting carried into battle by Hugh Jackman's Wolverine. As soon as Dogpool was revealed on Instagram, Ryan Reynolds knew that people would get a kick out of the concept. Viewers have already embraced Deadpool & Wolverine in a major way. But, the marketing keeps reaching for ways to climb higher and higher as time goes on. You can check out Dogpool and their newly acquired goggles right here down below.

Empire Magazine asked Ryan Reynolds about selecting a dog to be Dogpool. It turns out, the creative team knew pretty early on that the former Ugliest Dog in Britain was the canine for the job. (Credit to Preston Hoover from PAC Entertainment on Twitter for the spot on the new billboard.) Peggy, her real name, is an instant source of both comedy and feelings as Deadpool & Wolverine ride through the Multiverse. "It's love at first sight," Reynolds began. "He loves Dogpool. Her real name is Peggy, and she won the award for Britain's Ugliest Dog," the star mentioned. "The reason why I was a huge proponent for her was because she feels like the animal manifestation of Wade Wilson."

"It was, just like many things during the writing process, a tiny little afterthought, and it grew," he added during the profile. "It was one of those things where you just keep listening to the movie, and Dogpool became a staple."

Deadpool & Wolverine is inching closer and closer. With every passing day, Internet rumors about the project get louder and louder. Director Shawn Levy talked to EW about the speculation surrounding this MCU movie. Some of those rumors are correct, he says. However, social media, as ever, is a den of misinformation about certain things that happen in the movie. Every fan that buys a ticket will find out the truth for themselves in a few weeks. There might be some expectations that might not be met. However, one thing people headed to the theater can count on is the emotional core of this movie. Deadpool & Wolverine has made sure to put an emphasis on Wade and Logan's inner journeys too.

"We didn't want any of the cameos or characters to be the story of the movie," Levy explained. "But they are peppered in throughout. There's a lot of characters. The internet is a delight of rumors about the multitude of character cameos that are in this movie. Some rumors are true, some are way off base."

Marvel Rivals Reveals Spider-Man Gameplay Ahead of Beta https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/marvel-rivals-spider-man-gameplay-beta/ Wed, 03 Jul 2024 21:13:00 +0000 Tanner Dedmon 37a65709-7b92-4061-948d-e479d9b66ca9

Marvel Rivals developer NetEase Games and Marvel Entertainment announced late last month the dates for the console closed beta that'll take place in July, and ahead of those dates, we've been gettnig more and more looks at some of the different playable characters. Today, the spotlight was on Spider-Man, one of the Marvel heroes who'll undoubtedly be a go-to pick for those coming into the game for the first time this month. The trailer for Spider-Man shared this week finally showed off some of the character's gameplay which expectedly includes a lot of acrobatics and web-slinging.

In terms of hero classifications in Marvel Rivals, Spider-Man is considered a "Duelist" in this game. That puts him alongside others like Black Panther, Star-Lord, The Punisher, and other characters whose abilities are geared towards damage output. If you're familiar with other hero shooters like Overwatch 2, consider the Duelists the DPS characters of Marvel Rivals. The other classes are Vanguards which are the tankier characters as well as the Strategists which specialize in support.

As expected, Spider-Man can swing around on webs and can also run on walls. He's got the ability to pull enemies to him as well in order to deal damage up close, though you're probably not going to want to be pulling someone like the Hulk or another similar hero unless they're being yanked out of position.

In addition to the gameplay revealed in the trailer, the same video also showed off some of the alternate skins that Spider-Man will have in Marvel Rivals. One of those is apparently a new take on the beloved Bombastic Bagman look Spider-Man got during his Fantastic Four team-up.

"You know the story, after a radioactive spider granted Peter Parker his arachnid powers, he started to shoulder the great responsibility of protecting everyone in his friendly neighborhood. While Peter never leaves home without his endless stream of quips and inexhaustible optimism, the crisis of the Timestream Entanglement puts him at odds with some of his greatest allies and unforgettable foes. But, with the Web of Life and Destiny hanging on by a thread, every amazing Spider-Totem and Web-Warrior will need to join the fray, even those that forgot their suit at home..."

Marvel Rivals will get a closed beta for consoles and the PC platform on July 23rd, so expect to see more reveals between now and then.

Marvel TV Head Teases Upcoming Surprises, Marvel Zombies https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/marvel-zombies-tv-teases-upcoming-surprises-mcu-brad-winderbaum-ms-marvel/ Wed, 03 Jul 2024 20:46:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 264f9652-f5a7-46ac-8f9d-af94c035b94d

Marvel Zombies got a surprising shout out this week. The Official Marvel Podcast had Marvel TV head honcho Brad Winderbaum on and he couldn't resist teasing the mature animated series. "There's a lot of surprises around the bend and I can't choose a favorite but I'm very excited for people to see what we've done with Marvel Zombies," Winderbaum said. So, it seems like there's been some real momentum with the show since the last time it was mentioned at D23. The show is still coming and the comics series is still really beloved among fans, so Marvel Studios is still hammering away at it.

One big bright spot from Marvel Zombies is going to be Iman Vellani's Kamala Khan. She's the center of the story and leading the fight against the undead in this universe. Speaking to The Direct, the Ms. Marvel star said, "Kamala is kind of the center of the show. They described it to me, it's like, 'She's basically the Frodo of the story.' And I was like, 'That's amazing.'" As an added bonus, Vellani also mentioned that the recording sessions have basically ended. So, the release of the series is down to Marvel's discretion and how long animating the show takes. So, just like before, the waiting game is on!

As people are navigating The Multiverse Saga, there are more different projects than ever. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige talked the need to take risks last week. He told the Official Marvel Podcast that the upcoming slate leans into some of this thought a lot. Stuff like Wonder Man, Agatha All Along, and Daredevil: Born Again explore new ground. Back when WandaVision hit, the massive experiment did numbers for Disney+. A lot of the series that seemed out of left field have done just fine viewership-wise. Marvel Zombies is going to windmill some of the momentum from X-Men '97 and What If...?. Here's what the President of Marvel Studios had to say!

"Marvel is The House of Ideas, it's always been The House of Ideas, and I hope we'll always be the House of Ideas. Which means, taking new storylines and new characters to new places. Sometimes they'll hit and sometimes they won't," Feige shared with the show. "When you stop trying is when you atrophy and the whole thing will fall in on itself. I think it's trying to tell new and unique stories in different ways. We have a show coming up that we've talked very little about called Wonder Man, that I won't talk about much today either except to say it's extremely different than what we've done before."

Deadpool & Wolverine Director Responds to Cameo Rumors: "Some Rumors Are True" https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/deadpool-wolverine-director-responds-to-cameo-rumors-some-rumors-are-true/ Wed, 03 Jul 2024 20:05:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 75bea1c9-9d1a-4f07-aa28-5dc0889d0c1c

Deadpool & Wolverine is finally being released later this month, and Marvel fans are beyond excited to see Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman return to the titular roles. When it comes to the threequel, there's a lot to look forward to, but moviegoers can also expect some surprises along the way. Ever since the project was announced, there have been rumors about cameos ranging from Marvel legends to pop stars like Taylor Swift, and while some fun names have actually been confirmed, you never know who could be popping up. During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Shawn Levy teased more cameos, but wants fans to know that the movie will be more than just surprises.

"We didn't want any of the cameos or characters to be the story of the movie," Levy explained. "But they are peppered in throughout. There's a lot of characters. The internet is a delight of rumors about the multitude of character cameos that are in this movie. Some rumors are true, some are way off base."

As we wait to find out who else will be making cameo appearances in the film, there is one actor we know we won't be seeing. Vinnie Jones, who played Juggernaut in X-Men: The Last Stand, recently told Yahoo UK that he turned down a cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine.

"Funnily enough I just got asked to do Deadpool, the new one now, and I spoke to the director and I just said it's such a drama putting that suit on mentally and physically," Jones explained. "I mean it had its mental toll as well because you're in it and you can't do anything all day, you can only drink through a straw. So we couldn't strike the deal for Deadpool."

"Deadpool's my favorite movie of all f*cking time more or less," he added. "I really wanted to do it, but they didn't have the budget to put me in the suit."

Wonder Man Star Teases Major Marvel Villain Role https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/wonder-man-marvel-villain-role-mcu-demetrius-grosse-grim-reaper/ Wed, 03 Jul 2024 19:34:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 08f3a3e6-b3ed-46f0-85a6-f95097513009

One of Wonder Man's big stars is teasing a role as one of Marvel's major villains. Demetrius Grosse says fans should keep their eyes peeled for Eric Williams and The Grim Reaper in the Disney+ series. During an interview for Sound of Hope, the actor told ComicBookMovie that Simon Williams is going to have some interesting interactions with his brother. In the comics, Wonder Man tangles with The Grim Reaper quite a bit. Their brotherly bond is something that is explored on the page a lot as well. (Vision fans should be extra interested in this series as well as The Grim Reaper has some ties to the Tom King storyline and some 90s favorites too. In fact, a reference to the villain made its way into one of the intro sequences for WandaVision.)

So, clearly, Marvel Studios is teasing something really unique with Wonder Man. For Groose, that means some uncomfortable conversations with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II coming our way during the show. Check out what else the actor had to say about The Grim Reaper's big MCU entrance and the standoff with Simon Williams right here.

"Yes, and I think people are going to be intrigued by the dynamic between Simon Williams and Eric Williams as much as they're excited about the dynamic between Grim Reaper and Wonder Man," the actor teases in the video above. "This series is gonna be a very, very different kind of show, but pleasantly so."

Wonder Man Teases Something Completely New

Wonder Man is poised to be "extremely different."

- Marvel Entertainment)

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige talked about Wonder Man last week. He stopped by the Official Marvel Podcast to tease a lot of the upcoming slate. The MCU's head man said that Wonder Man would be unlike anything the studio has produced before. Feige also discussed how they had to keep taking risks when it came to new shows and movies. The desire to innovate has led them down some of their most interesting roads. WandaVision itself was a massive experiment. Deadpool & Wolverine is a massive tease at what the future of some beloved characters from the past will look like in the new MCU. X-Men '97 downright sounded like a bad idea on-paper. So, that roll of the dice can be really interesting. Wonder Man is being billed as a Hollywood satire, so we have to start there.

"Marvel is The House of Ideas, it's always been The House of Ideas, and I hope we'll always be the House of Ideas. Which means, taking new storylines and new characters to new places. Sometimes they'll hit and sometimes they won't," Feige mused. "When you stop trying is when you atrophy and the whole thing will fall in on itself. I think it's trying to tell new and unique stories in different ways. We have a show coming up that we've talked very little about called Wonder Man, that I won't talk about much today either except to say it's extremely different than what we've done before."

Marvel Teases Spider-Man's Death in New Event https://comicbook.com/comics/news/marvel-8-deaths-spider-man-event-teaser/ Wed, 03 Jul 2024 19:19:00 +0000 Timothy Adams 08ae88e7-3941-4655-8d04-497e3a534ae6

An upcoming Spider-Man story arc teases death for the wall-crawler. Writer Zeb Wells and artist John Romita Jr. are nearing the end of their run on The Amazing Spider-Man, so that means it's time for Marvel Comics to start marketing what's to follow. Readers have witnessed Mary Jane Watson start a new relationship with Paul, Norman Osborn take on a heroic identity as the Gold Goblin, Ben Reilly's transformation into the villainous Chasm, Ms. Marvel's death and resurrection, a Gang War, and much more. But now, the Grim Reaper is coming for the Spider-Man Family.

Marvel released a teaser for "The 8 Deaths of Spider-Man," a 10-issue arc launching this fall in Amazing Spider-Man that takes place following the end of Zeb Wells' run on the title. We also gained details on the creative team for "The 8 Deaths of Spider-Man." Per the Marvel press release, "Following Zeb Wells' landmark run, writer Joe Kelly and Justina Ireland alongside artists Ed McGuinness and Gleb Melnikov bring you a new Spidey epic titled THE 8 DEATHS OF SPIDER-MAN. Stay tuned in the coming weeks for more information on this 10-issue arc launching this fall!"

The artwork for "The 8 Deaths of Spider-Man" features a red-stained sky with eight gravestones marked in the ground. Of course, these gravestones could signify the deaths of eight individuals in Peter Parker / Spider-Man's life. The web-slinger has worked hard to make it so he doesn't suffer any more losses, after being plagued by the tragic losses of Uncle Ben, Gwen Stacy, and many others.

There is also the controversial "Spider-Man: One More Day" story arc that saw Spider-Man make a deal with Mephisto to save the life of Aunt May. In return, Spider-Man had to give up his marriage to Mary Jane. In this scenario, Peter traded his marriage for Aunt May's safety.

What is Zeb Wells' final Spider-Man story about?

Marvel released teaser art for Amazing Spider-Man #58, which begins the final showdown with Tombstone. "Tombstone's revenge! Spanning multiple issues, Spidey's most brutal battle begins in Amazing Spider-Man #58," the press release reads. "Hitting stands in September, the visceral issue will kick off the climactic final arc of Zeb Wells and John Romita Jr.'s epic run!" The art by John Romita Jr. shows Spider-Man perching on a building in a pouring thunderstorm, with rain falling all across his costume. Fans may be wondering why Tombstone is the chosen villain to end this era of Spider-Man comics, but Wells has been setting this up ever since he helped relaunch Amazing Spider-Man.

Uncanny X-Men Trailer Released by Marvel https://comicbook.com/comics/news/marvel-uncanny-x-men-trailer-gail-simone-david-marquez-from-the-ashes/ Wed, 03 Jul 2024 18:45:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo a3e7e5fd-dd41-48f0-adaf-b50ba9b82fc6

The Krakoan Age of mutantkind is over -- but from the ashes comes a new era of the Uncanny X-Men. There's a new leader (Rogue), a new team (Wolverine, Jubilee, Gambit, and Nightcrawler), a new status quo (Professor X is Inmate X, and the X-Men are outlaws), a new home (in Louisiana, after Xavier's school was transformed into Graymalkin Prison), and a new creative team (DC's Wonder Woman writer Gail Simone and Avengers artist David Marquez).

Marvel on Wednesday revealed the trailer for the upcoming relaunch of Uncanny X-Men, the second of three flagship X-titles set in the all-new From the Ashes era (along with Jed MacKay and Ryan Stegman's X-Men in July and Eve L. Ewing and Carmen Carnero's Exceptional X-Men in September). Uncanny X-Men #1 goes on sale August 7th with a lineup of variant covers from superstar artists Jim Lee (X-Men), Leinil Francis Yu (Wolverine), Andy Kubert (Ultimate X-Men), and more.

The official synopsis states, "With Professor X gone and his school transformed into a nightmare reflection of itself, the series sees Rogue step up to be the pillar of Xavier's dream alongside Wolverine, Gambit, Nightcrawler, and Jubilee. From their new base of operations in New Orleans, the Uncanny X-Men are back to being the outlaw heroes the world hates and fears -- and the light in the darkness for mutants everywhere! Mutantkind made a big statement with Krakoa, and now, life is harder for them than ever before, but Rogue's X-Men will be there to welcome mutants to their newfound family.

"A core group of essential X-Men rise From the Ashes to face a world without a home -- and without Professor X! All bonds among the mutant community seem to be slipping away, and Rogue reluctantly finds herself as the hero designated to bring them back together... but a fearless, malignant power is out there hunting mutants, and it has a terrible secret that may destroy what remains of the X-Men."

uncx2024001-marquez.jpg

"The X-Men are fractured in the aftermath of the end of Krakoa, scattered across the globe without a central base of operation," Marvel Comics VP Executive Editor Tom Brevoort said when announcing the next X-Men era. "What that means in practice is that all three titles carrying the name X-Men are core X-Men series-they all center around one of the major aspects of what the team has been about at different points. This is very much by design. We want to field a wide assortment of X-titles with different styles and tones and approaches, an X-Men book for virtually any taste."

X-Men #1 is on stands July 10th, followed by Uncanny X-Men #1 on August 7th and Exceptional X-Men #1 on September 4th.

Agatha All Along Is a "Fun," "Scary" Marvel Halloween Show, Says Marvel TV Head https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/agatha-marvel-halloween-mcu-show-fun-scary-brad-winderbaum-wandavision/ Wed, 03 Jul 2024 18:01:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 27c48500-65ab-40cc-a7e2-9315bd3a68a4

Agatha All Along is being called "scary" by Marvel's head of television, Brad Winderbaum. The executive sat down for an interview with Marvel's Official Podcast on Wednesday. He teased some of the "fun" coming fans' way with the WandaVision spinoff series. Along with some other updates on Marvel Television fare like X-Men '97 and Daredevil: Born Again, he singled out Agatha All Along as a Halloween show that brings out the drama in a real way. A lot of Disney+ fans fell in love with Agatha Harkness back in the WandaVision days. It seems like Kathryn Hahn's witch has her work cut out for her in the upcoming Marvel TV series. There's going to be an emotional journey with everyone's favorite Westview anti-hero. Winderbaum explains further down below.

"Agatha is, it's really fun, but it's really scary and it gets quite dramatic. She's an amazing anti-hero and that show is... it lures you in with the fun of Halloween and before you know it you're crying," Winderbaum shared. "I'll put it to ya that way...It's a Marvel brand of scary. It's a Halloween show. There are deadly stakes in this series. It's a fun ride but it's a dangerous one."

This week has been full of surprising Agatha All Along news too. Empire Magazine gave fans a new look at Agatha Hahn's witch and her ragtag coven. It seems like the Marvel Studios show will force together people from around the world to solve some kind of magical mystery. Agatha was in Westview under Wanda's spell at the end of WandaVision and we still don't know how she gets out. However, it seems that once she escapes that hex, there's some new trouble for Agatha and her young ward to contend with. (That's right, we haven't even mentioned Joe Locke's mysterious role in Agatha All Along. He's been in a bunch of the behind the scenes footage released on the WandaVision steelbook...) Hijinks abound, here's what showrunner Jack Schaeffer had to say about the upcoming title.

"[Where] WandaVision played with the form of classic TV sitcoms, [here] we do a lot of playing with what the assumptions about witches are," Schaeffer explained. "Like, what are the shorthand visuals for witches?"

"What they have in common is that they're covenless witches," Schaeffer continued. "Witches are defined by deception, treachery, villainy and selfishness. What do you do when you have a group of witches who [demonstrate] those notions and you need them to work together?"

Deadpool & Wolverine's Pyro Actor Is Happy to Finally Have a Superhero Suit https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/deadpool-wolverines-pyro-aaron-stanford-happy-to-finally-have-a-superhero-suit/ Wed, 03 Jul 2024 17:53:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 5cf7d89c-53cb-44fc-9194-27c0d044c17d

July is here, which means it is officially the month of Deadpool & Wolverine. The long-awaited Deadpool threequel will see Ryan Reynolds stepping back into the role of Deadpool/Wade Wilson while Hugh Jackman is back as Wolverine/Logan, the role he first played in X-Men in 2000. Turns out, Jackman isn't the only actor from Fox's X-Men films who will be showing up in the new movie. Earlier this year, it was confirmed by the Super Bowl trailer that Aaron Stanford's Pyro will be showing up in the project. During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Stanford spoke about his return to Marvel and addressed finally getting to wear a superhero suit.

"I was just very happy to even have a costume," Stanford shared.

Hugh Jackman Reveals the Hardest Part About Playing Wolverine Again:

Jackman recently sat down with Reynolds for a conversation via People. During the chat, Reynolds praised Jackman's dedication, and Jackman revealed the hardest part about getting back to his Wolverine body.

"Just the sheer relentlessness that you dedicated yourself towards stunts, choreography," Reynolds said. "It was the first time I'd ever seen how invaluable a background in song and dance is when you are doing an action movie ... You hit your marks in those fight scenes with speed and confidence, the likes of which I have never seen."

"I don't care if you were 25, 35, 45 or 55. It was lightning ... Watching you do what just looked like a clinic on stunt work was one of the most impressive things I've ever seen in my life," he added.

"When I came back to it, it was really fun and I was thrilled," Jackman explained. "My body was a little sore at the beginning, but I was thrilled that my body was still responding. And I realized how good it is for your brain."

"The hardest bit...[was] the food," Jackman added. "I have to eat a lot. For me, for my body type, I'm naturally skinny. To get the size on, that's the hardest bit. That's the bit that does my head in."

"Yeah, the five, six meals a day, which sounds great to some people," Reynolds agreed. "I'm sure they're like, 'Well, that sounds great.' But it's not like the type of food that you would really necessarily enjoy."

Deadpool & Wolverine Box Office Tracking for Record-Breaking Opening Weekend https://comicbook.com/movies/news/deadpool-wolverine-box-office-record-opening-weekend/ Wed, 03 Jul 2024 16:50:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 19345b2e-06c4-4279-b547-4ff30e1b874a

According to the latest box office projections, Deadpool & Wolverine is on track for a record-breaking opening weekend.

According to reports by NRG and other box office analysts, Deadpool & Wolverine is on track for an opening weekend box office of $160 million-$165 million. That would be the best opening weekend for any 2024 movie, and would be the biggest opening ever for an R-rated movie, replacing the original Deadpool movie, which opened to $132.4 million in 2016. Previous projections had Deadpool 3 possibly reaching as high as $200M in its opening weekend, and it's noted that figure is still within most analysts' range of projections.

Bottom line: Deadpool & Wolverine is going to be a win for Disney and Marvel Studios - the only question is how big of a hit it will be.

The truth is: that slashing and clawing its way to box office profits is only part of the challenge for Deadpool & Wolverine. The film has behind-the-scenes pressures: The Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise hasn't had the brand power it once enjoyed. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige and Disney (now back under CEO Bob Iger) have been making big course-corrective moves with the MCU since Phase 4 seemed to stumble both on the theatrical and Television fronts.

Deadpool 3 is being looked at as the comeback kid that will once again make the MCU a premium brand, with fan confidence fully behind it. The creative team behind the film knows it, too, as Deadpool & Wolverine trailers have featured Ryan Reynolds' Wade Wilson joking that he's now "Marvel Jesus" who is poised to save the MCU franchise.

Marvel TV Head Teases Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Details https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/marvel-tv-head-teases-friendly-your-neighborhood-spider-man-details/ Wed, 03 Jul 2024 15:43:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame e7efb5ce-df03-4f86-a26d-62b0596e77d1

In a new interview, Marvel Studios' Head of Marvel Streaming, Television and Animation Brad Winderbaum teased a few details about Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, the upcoming series set during Peter Parker's earliest years as Spider-Man and Peter's life in high school. Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, a 2D-animated series covering Spider-Man's early years, is set to debut on Disney+ this fall. Originally announced as Spider-Man: Freshman Year, the series has been in the works since 2021, and was created by Craig of the Creek's Jeff Trammell. The show will be set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, although Hudson Thames (What If...?) will reprise his role as Spider-Man, rather than live-action franchise star Tom Holland.

Speaking about a wide variety of subjects in the podcast, Winderbaum didn't spend a ton of time on any of them -- but he did give more information on Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man than we have gotten in one place so far. He explained it in a way that totally explains why they hired Trammel to run the show.

"There are twists and turns in that show that are amazing, but the real power is the ensemble, is the neighborhood," Winderbaum said on the Official Marvel Podcast. He noted that Jeff Trammel previously had a similar dynamic in Craig of the Creek.

"He's amped that up in such a major way playing with characters like -- not just Peter Parker -- Nico Minoru, Lonnie Lincoln, my personal favorite, Harry Osborn, and others that flesh out this teenage ensemble," Winderbaum added.

Spider-Man animated series have been a fairly constant presence on TV for decades, with the most recent being the preschool series Spidey and His Amazing Friends, which features Peter Parker, Miles Morales, and the Ghost Spider version of Gwen Stacy. This is the first Spider-Man series that ties directly into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, sharing not only a continuity with MCU movies, but reportedly some actors as well with Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio reported to reprise their roles from Daredevil.

The Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man voice cast reportedly includes the likes of Eugene Byrd (Spidey and His Amazing Friends, 8 Mile) as Lonnie Lincoln, Grace Song (Kidding) as Nico Minoru, Hugh Dancy (Hannibal) as Otto Octavius, Kari Wahlgren (FLCL, Rick and Morty) as Aunt May, and Zeno Robinson (My Hero Academia, Pokemon Master Journeys: The Series) as Harry Osborn.

Tackled by Polygon Pictures, a prominent studio behind anime releases such as Pacific Rim: The Black, Netflix's Godzilla film trilogy, and more, the Spider-Man series will apparently have a unique sound.
